Fort Briarwood hummed with unusual activity. It was a military heritage weekend, and several training facilities had been opened to retired service members. Most of the veterans and civilian visitors remained respectfully behind a marked yellow line, watching as the new recruits completed their final week of hand-to-hand combat assessment.

On the center mat, Private Cole Barrett was in his element. At twenty-four, he was a specimen of pure, unadulterated physical power: six feet four inches tall and weighing two hundred and thirty pounds. His broad shoulders stretched the fabric of his olive training shirt, and his black sparring gloves covered hands capable of shaking a heavy bag directly off its ceiling chain. He had spent the previous month defeating every opponent assigned to him, holding the fastest obstacle-course time in his platoon, and making sure everyone knew he was the strongest man in the gym.

He had just thrown another soldier heavily onto the mat when he noticed him.

An elderly stranger was standing closer than the other guests, well past the yellow line. He wore an old gray T-shirt, dark work pants, and brown combat boots repaired so many times that the original leather was barely visible beneath the meticulous stitching. He wore no medals, no veteran’s cap, and nothing that identified him as a former officer. To Cole, he looked like someone who had wandered away from a retirement-home tour.

Cole puffed his chest out, adrenaline still spiking from his recent victory. “You lost, sir?” he called out.

The old man glanced around calmly. “No.”

“This section is for active personnel.”

“I can see that,” the stranger replied quietly.

A few of the younger recruits chuckled. Encouraged by his audience, Cole walked to the edge of the mat. “You came to watch real soldiers train?”

The old man’s gray eyes flicked to the name tape on Cole’s chest, then analyzed his posture. “I came to see whether the training had changed.”

Cole opened his arms wide, a smirk playing on his lips. “Well?”

The old man studied him with an unsettling stillness. He saw that Cole’s feet were spread too far apart. His shoulders carried unnecessary tension. His chin was high—the physical manifestation of a man accustomed to everyone else lowering theirs.

“The equipment is better,” the old man finally said.

The recruits waited in silence. Cole leaned forward, the smirk fading into a scowl. “What about the soldiers?”

“That depends on the soldier.”

The smiles in the room vanished. Cole stepped close enough that the stranger could undoubtedly smell the bitter rubber of his sparring gloves. “You should be careful how you speak in here.”

“Why?”

“Because you are surrounded by men trained to fight.”

The old man looked around the expansive gym, entirely unfazed. “I have stood among them before.”

Cole laughed out loud. “Of course you have.” He reached out, placing a heavy, gloved hand on the old man's narrow shoulder. “We are not finished.”

The stranger looked down at the glove. “Remove it.”

The quiet, unshakable command irritated Cole far more than any insult could have. “Or what?”

“Or you will learn something your instructors should have taught you already.”
