But Cole barely heard him. The room was changing sides. The admiring gazes of his peers had vanished; they were now studying the old man with awe. Cole hated that feeling. He had always believed respect belonged to the strongest person present. Until that morning, that person had always been him.
He lowered his stance, eyes dark with fury. The stranger observed the shift without reacting.
Cole charged. He threw a massive left hook, driving his shoulder forward, fully intending to knock the old man off the mat even if the punch missed.
The stranger stepped inside the hook. One weathered hand redirected Cole’s flying wrist. The other made brief, calculated contact with his elbow. Then, the old man pivoted his hips. Cole’s own immense momentum betrayed him, carrying him past his target.
His right knee crashed into the mat. One hand slapped down just in time to prevent his face from following.
A sharp sound rippled through the watching soldiers. It wasn’t laughter. It was absolute surprise.
Cole rose immediately, spinning around. The old man remained behind him, perfectly balanced. He hadn't thrown a single punch.
“You got lucky,” Cole breathed heavily.
The stranger tilted his head. “Then try again.”
Vega stepped firmly between them. “That is enough.”
Cole pushed past his superior. “No.”
The sergeant grabbed Cole’s arm, but the towering private tore it free. The moment he did, Vega understood that this was no longer a controlled demonstration. Cole was no longer sparring; he was desperately fighting for his pride.
“Private Barrett, stand down!” Vega barked.
But Cole had already charged.
The old man waited until the absolute final fraction of a second. Then, he dramatically lowered his center of gravity, caught Cole’s forward arm, and swept one heavy, stitched boot directly behind Cole's ankle.
The gym ceiling violently spun above Cole. His back struck the mat with a thunderous crack, the impact forcing every ounce of air from his lungs.
Before Cole could even gasp for breath, the old man was kneeling beside him. A forearm rested lightly across Cole’s chest, pinning him. Two fingers rested gently against the side of Cole's neck.
Cole understood the tactical position instantly. With slightly more pressure, the stranger could restrict his airway. With a different movement, he could collapse the artery beneath those fingers.
The old man looked down at the struggling private.
“Strength without discipline is only danger wearing a uniform.”
Then, as quickly as he had taken Cole down, he released him and stood up.
No one spoke. The heavy breathing of Private Barrett was the only sound in the cavernous gym.
Then, from the entrance, came a quiet, authoritative voice.
