"Travis, stop!" Melissa yelled, rushing forward and grabbing her partner's tactical vest to pull him back. "What the hell are you doing?! She was just picking up her necklace!"
"She reached for my belt!" Travis lied loudly, his voice tight and defensive as he looked around at the glaring crowd. "You all saw it! She made a sudden aggressive movement toward an officer!"
"You hit her!" Leonard roared, charging toward the scene before Melissa waved him back with an authoritative hand. "We all saw it, you coward! You just slapped an innocent woman!"
Travis drew his handcuffs, his face flushed red with a mixture of embarrassment and rage. "She's resisting! She's going down!"
Zariah slowly bent down, picked up the silver necklace from the dirt, and cupped it gently in her hand. She straightened up, looked Travis dead in the eye, and spoke with a terrifying, absolute calmness that chilled Melissa to the bone.
"You have just made the single biggest mistake of your life," Zariah said softly.
Travis let out a harsh, nervous laugh. "Is that a threat? Are you threatening a police officer?"
"It is not a threat," Zariah replied, her voice steady and resonant. "It is a statement of fact."
