The sun was shining brightly, just as it had been a year ago. But this time, she wasn't alone. Walking beside her was her mother, Simone. Waiting on the sidewalk was Dana Whitaker holding a fresh box of cupcakes, Malik Carter with his bicycle, and Darius Bell with his mother. The city had repainted the crosswalk with bright new white stripes and installed an extended pedestrian safety timer.

Aaliyah walked up to the pole and pushed the pedestrian crossing button.

The signal beeped, and the bright white walking figure illuminated, counting down from 25 seconds.

For a second split, Aaliyah hesitated at the curb, her shoulders instinctively tightening as memories flashed through her mind. Simone reached down and gently took her hand, giving it a soft squeeze.

"We can turn back if you want, sweetie," Simone offered gently.

Aaliyah looked at the crosswalk, then up at her mother, and smiled with quiet, unbreakable strength.

"No," Aaliyah said softly. "I'm ready."

She stepped off the curb and walked confidently across the street, her head held high under the warm sun, taking her first real steps into a bright, fearless future.
