News of the morning challenge spread quickly through Bitter Creek. The local diner, the supply store, and the gas station were all buzzing with rumor. A rich black belt was going to take on old Arthur Hayes down on the lower boundary line.
That evening, a dark blue sedan pulled into Arthur’s gravel driveway. An older man got out, leaning heavily on a wooden cane. It was Sheriff Thomas Miller, a man who had served the county for thirty years and knew every family within a hundred miles.
Arthur was sitting on his porch, cleaning a pair of leather reins. He didn't look up as Miller walked up the steps and sat on the wooden bench across from him.
"You're making a spectacle, Arthur," Miller said, taking off his hat and wiping his forehead. "Carmichael’s been down at the station complaining about padlocks and assault. I told him to file a civil suit if he didn't like it, but he says you agreed to a fight tomorrow morning."
"He closed my easement," Arthur said simply.
"I know," Miller sighed. "He's an arrogant kid with more money than sense. But he's got high-priced lawyers, Arthur. And he actually knows how to fight. I've seen the videos he posts online—he's fast, he's technical."
Arthur set down the reins and looked out over his fields toward the sunset. "Speed and technique are fine in a ring with a referee, Tom."
Miller looked at Arthur, his eyes softening with deep, long-standing memory. Miller was one of only three people in Montana who knew Arthur’s full military record. He knew about the classified operations in the early 2000s. He knew about the Silver Star, the Navy Cross, and the unit that didn't officially exist on government rosters—an elite tier-one counter-terrorism unit that operated in the darkest corners of the world.
"He doesn't know who you are, does he?" Miller asked quietly.
"Nobody needs to know," Arthur replied. "That life was twenty years ago. I buried it when I came home to this ranch."
"Arthur... if you break that boy, his family will come after you with everything they have. They have political connections in Washington."
Arthur stood up, walking to the edge of the porch. "I won't break him, Tom. I'm just going to show him where the boundary line actually is."
