Miller stood up, shaking his head with a faint smile. "Just try not to put him in the hospital. I don't want to do the paperwork."

At 5:45 a.m., the sun was just beginning to streak the eastern sky with purple and gold. The air was crisp and cold, carrying the sharp scent of pine and damp morning dew.
Weston Carmichael arrived at the easement road accompanied by six men. Three were his high-profile martial arts buddies, and two were private security guards carrying cameras to record the event. Weston was fully geared: custom fight shorts, mouthguard, hand wraps, and light sparring gloves. He was bouncing on his toes, shadowboxing in the early light, his muscles gleaming with sweat.
Arthur walked down the dirt road from his house carrying a mug of black coffee. He wore his usual work attire: heavy denim jeans, work boots, a plain grey t-shirt, and his leather work belt. He set his coffee mug down on a fence post and stepped onto the open dirt path.
"Look at this," Weston laughed, turning to his cameras. "The cowboy didn't even bother to change. No wraps, no guards. Hope you brought health insurance, Hayes!"
The fighters laughed, though Marcus—the man Arthur had pinned the day before—stood near the back of the group, silent and watchful. Marcus had spent the previous night researching combat styles, trying to figure out what kind of system could neutralize a heavyweight in two seconds flat. He had a bad feeling about this.
"Terms are simple," Weston announced, stepping into the center of the road. "Submission or knockout. No referee. You give up when you can't take any more."
"Whenever you're ready, son," Arthur said calmly, taking a natural, relaxed stance. His hands were down near his waist, his eyes calm and unblinking.
Weston didn't wait. He closed the distance rapidly, stepping in with a sharp jab-cross combination, followed immediately by a low leg kick intended to chop down Arthur’s lead leg. It was a textbook MMA entry—fast, aggressive, and technically precise.
To Weston's surprise, his jab hit empty air. Arthur didn't duck or cover up; he simply tilted his head two inches to the left, letting the punch slip past his ear. As the low kick came swinging in, Arthur shifted his weight back slightly, catching the kick on his thick leather boot, completely deflecting the impact.

Before Weston could retract his leg, Arthur stepped inside his guard, his shoulder driving gently into Weston's chest, throwing him completely off balance.

Weston stumbled back, his boots dragging in the dirt, surprise flashing across his face. He quickly reset his stance, shaking his head.
