Several children laughed. Noah’s face turned bright red, and he stared at the

mat. Ethan’s grip tightened around his scratched steel coffee mug. A father sitting

beside him leaned closer.

"Coach is a little harsh," the man whispered. "But maybe kids need that now.

Toughens them up."

"There is a difference between teaching discomfort and creating humiliation,"

Ethan replied, his voice calm but icy.

The other father nodded uncertainly and looked away.

After class, Ethan waited until the mat cleared and approached Mason, who was

wiping down a kicking shield.

"Noah is new."

"I know," Mason said without looking up.

"He responds better to clear instruction than ridicule."

Mason finally stopped and smiled, the kind of smile one gives to a worried,

overprotective parent.

"Mr. Walker, I understand that parents want to protect their kids."

"I am asking you to teach him."

"That is what I’m doing."
