jaw clenched.

"Grab my shoulder," Mason instructed.

Noah placed one trembling hand against the instructor’s thick upper arm.

"Harder."

Noah tightened his grip, though he clearly had no leverage.

Mason addressed the class loudly.

"When somebody grabs you, you step in, turn the hips, break the base, and finish the

takedown."

He demonstrated a common outer-leg throw. With an adult training partner

who knew how to fall, it would have been a standard, safe drill. With a beginner,

especially a small child, an instructor should have controlled the descent by holding

the sleeve, protecting the student’s head, ribs, and shoulder as they went down.

Mason did neither.

He drove his heavy forearm across Noah’s chest, violently swept the boy’s leg

out from under him, and threw him downward with enough force to make the

entire room hear the sickening smack of impact.

Noah hit the mat awkwardly on his side. The air exploded from his small lungs

in a sharp gasp. His eyes widened in shock. His mouth opened, but no sound

emerged. For several terrifying seconds, he could not breathe.

"No. You did nothing wrong."

Mason stood towering over them, arms crossed, visibly annoyed by the

interruption.

"He failed to protect himself," Mason stated, loud enough for the parents to

hear. "He needs to learn toughness."

Ethan completely ignored him, focusing solely on his son.

"Can you move your fingers?" he asked Noah gently.

"Yes."

"Any pain in your neck?"

"No."

"Dizzy?"

"A little bit."

Ethan helped him sit up slowly, but did not force him to stand. He wanted to be

sure nothing was broken.
