Sheriff Morrison cleared his throat near the phone. "That window may have already closed, sir."
Richard went entirely silent before softly disconnecting the call.
Karen immediately dialed Harold Vance, the board president. "Harold! I need the board's legal counsel dispatched to the Chen property immediately!"
"Karen?" Harold’s voice sounded tired. "Where are you?"
"At Chen’s farm!"
Another silence stretched over the line. "Why?"
"My SUV is stuck in his field!"
"Did you enter through the locked gate?"
Karen offered no answer.
Harold exhaled heavily. "The board voted to remove you from the access committee yesterday evening, Karen."
"You cannot remove me without a full membership vote!"
"We held a quorum and voted. The association is releasing an official statement clarifying that you acted entirely as an individual. Green Meadows claims no right of access across the Chen farm."
"You are abandoning me!"
"No," Harold replied firmly. "We are refusing to defend a false claim." He hung up.
For the first time since I had met her, Karen stood completely silent. Her authority had not been taken by force; it had simply vanished the moment the people around her stopped validating her assertions.
The Accounting
Walt Brennan arrived with his heavy-duty recovery tow truck shortly after noon. He had hauled tractors out of flooded river bottoms and pulled semi-trucks out of snowdrifts, evaluating the situation with a practiced eye.
"That's going to be an expensive extraction," Walt observed.
Karen stood near the road wearing only one shoe; the other remained buried somewhere in the clay swale. "How expensive?"
"To pull it free without ripping off the bumper? Seven hundred dollars."
She gasped. "And what about the mechanical damage?"
"Won't know until it's pressure-washed," Walt said. "Silt likely reached the lower electrical harness and sensors. The frame took a hard hit entering the trench."
"This is entirely his fault!" Karen declared.
Walt looked at the clear warning signs, then at the severed chain lying on the ground. "Did he drive your car into the ditch, lady?"
"No!"
"Then I'd take it up with the person behind the wheel."
Walt attached heavy recovery straps to the frame. The SUV pulled free slowly, releasing from the deep clay with a loud suctioning sound. The window sticker proclaiming her board membership finally peeled off completely, sinking into the brown sludge.
Karen then called her automotive insurance provider, explaining that she had entered private land to utilize a disputed route and driven past warning notices after cutting a locked gate. The representative asked if law enforcement had issued a citation.
Karen glanced toward Morrison. "Yes."
She listened to the representative for several minutes, her shoulders slowly slumping. "What do you mean 'intentional acts are excluded from coverage'?"
Another long pause followed. "I didn't intentionally damage the vehicle!" she argued weakly. "He created the hazard!"
