“Hand Over the Pool Keys”

“Hand over the pool keys.”

Those were the first words Sergeant Daniel Voss spoke when he stepped through the cedar gate at Ethan Walker’s property.

Not hello.

Not Can we talk?

Not even I need to understand what’s happening here.

Just an order.

Daniel stood in uniform with one hand resting near his duty belt. Behind him, his patrol cruiser idled at the edge of the driveway, headlights spilling across the stone retaining wall.

Several feet behind him stood his wife, Patricia Voss.

President of the Pine Hollow Homeowners Association.

Her arms were crossed.

A small, satisfied smile curved her lips.

She looked like someone watching a plan unfold exactly as she had expected.

Ethan glanced from Daniel’s badge to Patricia.

Then he looked over his shoulder at the dark surface of the swimming pool.

“You really sent your husband for this?”

Patricia didn't blink.

“You ignored three compliance notices.”

“That pool is on my land.”

“It serves the neighborhood watershed.”

“No.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Keys.”

Ethan looked directly at him.

“Officer, are you here on police business?”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“I’m here to keep this from escalating.”

“That wasn't my question.”

Patricia scoffed.

“Don't play games.”

Ethan ignored her.

He kept his eyes on Daniel.

“Did your department dispatch you here?”

Silence.

“Is there a complaint number?”

Daniel shifted his weight.

“Mr. Walker—”

“Is this an official police action?”

Patricia interrupted.

“The HOA has authorized enforcement.”

Ethan finally turned toward her.

“The HOA is not a police department.”

Daniel’s voice hardened.

“You need to cooperate.”

“With what authority?”

The question hung in the cool evening air.

Behind Ethan, the pool pump hummed.

A cricket chirped somewhere near the retaining wall.

The patrol cruiser continued idling.

Patricia stepped closer.

“If you refuse, there will be consequences.”

Ethan studied her.

For the first time that evening, he smiled.

Not because the situation was funny.

Because she had just given him something useful.

He slowly reached toward the phone in his shirt pocket.

Daniel immediately stiffened.

“Keep your hands where I can see them.”

Ethan stopped.

“Interesting.”

“What?”

“I was going to tell you I'm recording.”

Patricia's face changed.

Daniel didn't move.

Ethan continued in an even voice.

“So let's make this simple.”

He looked directly at the sergeant.

“Sergeant Voss, are you demanding private property from me in your capacity as a police officer?”

Daniel glanced at Patricia.

Only once.

But Ethan saw it.

That glance told him more than an answer could have.

“Give me the keys,” Daniel said.

Ethan nodded slowly.

“Good.”
