Billionaire Family Slapped a Black CEO at a Gala — Seconds Later She Killed Their $1B Deal
Chapter 2
Bradley frowned.
“Who the hell are you?”
Margaret looked at him.
“Margaret Thompson.”
Jason Chen finally whispered:
“Oh my God.”
His wife turned toward him.
“What?”
Jason stared at Margaret.
“She's not staff.”
He swallowed.
“She owns Thompson Analytics.”
The ballroom went silent.
Jason's voice grew louder.
“She is Margaret Thompson.”
Someone behind him whispered:
“The AI company?”
“Yes.”
“The Thompson Analytics?”
“Yes.”
Margaret closed her portfolio.
“And tomorrow morning,” she said, “your family was supposed to announce a $1.2 billion partnership with my company.”
Vivien's face went completely white.
Margaret looked at the clock.
9:51.
The auction had nine minutes left.
And the Whitmores had no idea that the most important event of their evening had already begun.
The Contract
The first thing Margaret learned about powerful people was that they rarely believed they had made a mistake.
They believed someone else had made one.
Vivien Whitmore was no different.
“This is ridiculous,” she said.
Her voice had lost some of its certainty, but not her arrogance.
“You expect us to believe that you came here representing some billion-dollar company after causing this entire scene?”
Margaret looked at the blood on her fingers.
“I didn't cause it.”
Vivien's eyes flashed.
“You were provoking me.”
“I introduced myself.”
“You were acting suspiciously.”
“I told you about tomorrow's announcement.”
“You wouldn't leave.”
“I had no reason to leave.”
Bradley stepped forward.
“Okay, enough.”
He looked at Margaret.
“Whatever company you claim to run, you're still trespassing.”
Margaret raised an eyebrow.
“I'm on the guest list.”
That stopped him.
Bradley turned toward the hotel manager.
“Is she?”
The manager looked uncomfortable.
“Yes.”
Vivien stared at him.
“What?”
“She was registered as a principal guest.”
“Why wasn't I told?”
The manager hesitated.
“Mrs. Whitmore, Mr. Whitmore's office requested that she be admitted directly.”
Vivien's mouth opened.
No words came.
Margaret watched the realization settle.
Richard had known.
Richard had invited her.
Richard had arranged for her to attend.
And Richard had apparently never told his wife.
Margaret felt no satisfaction.
Not yet.
She had come to the gala for a simple reason.
The $1.2 billion agreement signed in Dubai required a final discussion before the public announcement.
She wanted to coordinate the language of the press release.
That was all.
She had expected perhaps twenty minutes of conversation.
Instead, she had received a racial insult and a cut across her face.
A security guard cleared his throat.
“Ms. Thompson, we still need to document what happened.”
Margaret nodded.
“Certainly.”
“Would you like medical assistance?”
“No.”
“Police?”
Margaret looked at Vivien.
“Yes.”
Vivien's eyes widened.
“What?”
“I would like the incident documented.”
Bradley immediately reached for his phone.
“Good. I'll call them.”
Margaret smiled.
“Please do.”
Bradley hesitated.
Something about her confidence unsettled him.
But he dialed anyway.
While he spoke, Ashley continued filming.
The viewer count had reached 31,000.
Comments moved rapidly across her screen.
Who is she?
Someone find out her name.
This is insane.
Why did that woman hit her?
She looks way too calm.
Whitmore family drama!
Ashley smiled nervously.
“Guys, apparently she's some kind of CEO.”
She laughed.
“But honestly, who knows?”
Jason Chen stepped toward her.
“Ashley.”
She looked at him.
“Stop streaming.”
“Why?”
“Because you don't understand what's happening.”
Ashley frowned.
“It's just content.”
“No.”
Jason glanced toward Margaret.
“This is not content.”
He turned back to Ashley.
“This is going to become evidence.”
Ashley lowered the phone slightly.
For the first time, fear crossed her face.
Meanwhile, Margaret's secure phone buzzed.
She looked at the screen.
GENERAL COUNSEL — THOMPSON ANALYTICS
A message:
WE HAVE THE VIDEO. DO NOT DISCUSS LIABILITY. WE ARE PREPARING RESPONSE.
Another message followed.
BOARD HAS BEEN NOTIFIED.
Margaret typed a single reply.
Wait.
She looked around the room.
The wealthy guests who had laughed moments ago were now watching her carefully.
Some looked embarrassed.
Others looked fascinated.
A few still looked skeptical.
Margaret understood them.
Money created its own gravity.
People naturally believed the person who looked like they belonged.
And tonight, Vivien looked like she belonged.
Margaret did not.
Not in their eyes.
That was the real problem.
Vivien walked closer.
“You think this gives you power?”
Margaret met her gaze.
“No.”
“Then why are you smiling?”
“Because you still don't understand.”
“Understand what?”
Margaret glanced at the blue folder.
“Who you assaulted.”
Vivien scoffed.
“You're a businesswoman.”
“Yes.”
“Nothing more.”
Margaret nodded.
“Exactly.”
That answer confused her.
Margaret continued.
“You think my title is what makes tonight important.”
Vivien said nothing.
“It isn't.”
Margaret placed the folder on the table.
“What makes tonight important is that your husband's company needs my company.”
Bradley laughed.
“Whitmore Industries doesn't need anyone.”
Jason Chen looked at him.
“You should stop talking.”
Bradley turned.
“What?”
Jason's voice was quiet.
“Seriously. Stop.”
Bradley glared at him.
“You're defending her?”
“I'm telling you to understand the situation before you make it worse.”
Margaret glanced at Jason.
“Thank you.”
Jason nodded.
“I've followed your work for years.”
“You should have said hello earlier.”
He gave a nervous laugh.
“I didn't recognize you immediately.”
“Most people don't.”
Jason looked at the cut on her cheek.
“I'm sorry.”
Margaret nodded.
“Thank you.”
Then the ballroom doors opened.
Two police officers entered.
Bradley immediately stepped toward them.
“That woman assaulted my mother.”
The officers looked at Vivien.
Then Margaret.
Then the broken glass.
One officer asked:
“Who called?”
“I did,” Bradley said.
