“Okay. Let's hear what happened.”

Vivien immediately began speaking.

“She attacked me.”

Margaret remained silent.

The officer turned to her.

“Is that your account?”

“No.”

“Would you like to give your statement?”

“Yes.”

Margaret took a breath.

“I introduced myself to Mrs. Whitmore. I explained that I was here regarding tomorrow's partnership announcement between Whitmore Industries and Thompson Analytics.”

The officer wrote it down.

“She became angry.”

“Why?”

Margaret looked at Vivien.

“Because she did not believe I belonged here.”

The officer glanced at Vivien.

“What happened next?”

“She told me to go back to the kitchen.”

Several guests shifted uncomfortably.

“She then struck me with her ring.”

Vivien immediately protested.

“That is not true!”

Margaret continued.

“The champagne glass broke when she moved her arm.”

The officer examined the blood.

“Do you have any witnesses?”

Margaret looked around.

Two hundred phones.

“Everyone here.”

The officer glanced toward Ashley.

“Were you recording?”

Ashley swallowed.

“Yes.”

“Can we see the footage?”

Ashley looked at her mother.

Vivien shook her head.

“No.”

The officer frowned.

“Ma'am, if the video captures the incident, we may need to review it.”

Margaret said nothing.

She didn't need to.

The truth was already everywhere.

Then the hotel manager's phone rang.

He answered.

His face changed.

“Yes, sir.”

Pause.

“Yes.”

Another pause.

His eyes moved toward Margaret.

“Yes, Mr. Whitmore.”

Margaret knew immediately.

Richard had finally reached him.

The manager ended the call.

He approached Margaret.

“Ms. Thompson?”

“Yes?”

“Mr. Whitmore would like to speak with you.”

Margaret nodded.

“Put him on speaker.”

The manager looked terrified.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

He pressed the button.

Richard Whitmore's voice came through.

“Margaret?”

“Yes, Richard.”

“What happened?”

Margaret looked at Vivien.

“Your wife happened.”

Silence.

Richard breathed heavily.

“Is she there?”

“Yes.”

“Is she hurt?”

“No.”

A pause.

“Are you?”

Margaret touched her cheek.

“Yes.”

Richard's voice changed.

“Margaret, I am so sorry.”

Vivien looked away.

Richard continued.

“I had no idea—”

“I know.”

“What can I do?”

Margaret looked at the blue folder.

“You can tell your family exactly who I am.”

Richard hesitated.

Then said quietly:

“They already know.”

“No.”

Margaret's voice hardened.

“They know my company.”

She looked at Vivien.

“They don't know what they have just risked.”

She ended the call.

Then she picked up the folder.

“It's 9:57.”

The auction would begin in three minutes.

Margaret turned toward the podium.

“I think it's time we talked about the contract.”

 Sixty-Seven Thousand Witnesses

At 9:58 p.m., Ashley Whitmore had 67,000 viewers.

She didn't understand how it had happened.

She had expected a few thousand followers to watch.

Instead, the video had spread beyond Instagram.

Screenshots were appearing on X.

Clips were appearing on TikTok.

People were identifying Margaret.

News accounts were posting her name.

MARGARET THOMPSON — CEO, THOMPSON ANALYTICS

The comments had become impossible to read.

She's a billionaire CEO.

They assaulted their business partner.

This cannot be real.

Someone call CNBC.

This is going viral.

Ashley stared at the screen.

Her stomach tightened.

She had turned her mother's humiliation of another woman into entertainment.

Now thousands of strangers were watching.

Her mother approached.

“Turn it off.”

Ashley didn't move.

“Ashley.”

“I can't.”

“Turn it off.”

“I don't know how to fix this.”

Vivien grabbed the phone.

Ashley pulled it away.

“Mom!”

“You're making this worse.”

“You made it worse!”

The words escaped before Ashley could stop them.

Vivien stared at her daughter.

The ballroom seemed suddenly colder.

Margaret stood near the podium.

She had removed the bloodstained tissue from her cheek.

The wound was small.

The humiliation was not.

She looked at the clock.

9:59.

One minute.

The hotel manager stepped onto the stage.

“Ladies and gentlemen, we are going to delay the auction briefly.”

No one moved.

Margaret walked toward him.

“Don't.”

He turned.

“Ms. Thompson?”

“Let the auction proceed.”

Everyone stared.

The manager looked confused.

“But—”

“I want the room full.”

She stepped onto the stage.

“And I want every phone recording.”

Vivien's face tightened.

“What are you doing?”

Margaret looked at her.

“Giving you an opportunity.”

“For what?”

“To choose.”

Margaret placed the blue folder on the podium.

“The contract your husband signed yesterday contains a reputation and conduct provision.”

Bradley laughed nervously.

“That doesn't mean anything.”

Margaret opened the document.

“It means everything.”

She turned toward the crowd.

“This is the partnership agreement between Whitmore Industries and Thompson Analytics.”

Several guests raised their phones higher.

“Signed yesterday in Dubai.”

She turned the first page.

“Total value: $1.2 billion over three years.”

The room erupted.

People began whispering.

One man actually said:

“Jesus.”

Margaret continued.

“Thompson Analytics will provide artificial intelligence infrastructure, predictive analytics, logistics optimization, and compliance systems across Whitmore Industries' operations in seventeen countries.”

Bradley stared at the document.

“This is fake.”

Margaret looked at him.

“Your father signed it.”

“You could have forged it.”

Margaret smiled.

“Your father has the original.”

That silenced him.

She turned to page eighteen.

“Now we reach the interesting section.”

Her finger moved down the page.

“Reputation and conduct.”

She read the relevant provision in her own words.

“The agreement allows termination when conduct by a principal, executive, or associated party creates substantial reputational harm to either organization.”
