“The sheriff's department is being used to intimidate witnesses. Complaints disappear. Arrest reports are altered. Body-camera footage is removed. Some officers participate willingly. Others are threatened into silence.”

Victoria looked at Sarah.

The recording continued.

“I have also discovered that a second network exists inside the federal investigation system. It identifies potential whistleblowers, monitors their communications, and provides information to the people being investigated.”

Another pause.

“If something happens to me, Eleanor has the original financial records. She knows where they are. I have made copies, but the original documents are the only ones that can establish the complete chain of responsibility.”

The recording crackled.

Then her father's voice became quieter.

“There is one person I am particularly worried about. Peter Wallace. He used to work in federal security. He knows how to make an accident look ordinary. He has been following me for three weeks.”

Victoria felt the room grow cold.

“Peter Wallace,” she whispered.

Sarah nodded grimly.

The recording continued.

“I don't know whether he has been hired to frighten me or to kill me. But if I disappear, do not assume it was an accident. And do not trust anyone who tells you that the matter has already been resolved.”

A sudden metallic sound interrupted the recording.

Her father spoke again, but his voice was different now.

“Someone is outside.”

There was a brief silence.

Then the recording ended.

Victoria stared at the device.

For years, she had believed her father died in a car accident on a rainy highway. The official report had described wet pavement, excessive speed, and a loss of control.

Now she knew someone had been following him.

Someone who had been paid to make sure he never finished his investigation.

Sarah removed the recorder from the desk.

“We need to secure this evidence immediately.”

Victoria nodded.

But before they could move, her phone vibrated.

An unknown number.

She answered without speaking.

A man's voice came through.

“You should have left the past buried, Director Bennett.”

Victoria looked at Sarah.

“Who is this?”

“You already know enough to understand what happens when people refuse to listen.”

“Is that supposed to frighten me?”

“No. It's supposed to give you one last opportunity to walk away.”

Victoria's grip tightened around the phone.

“My father was murdered because he refused to walk away. My mother spent years protecting the evidence. And now you think I'm going to abandon everything because someone calls me?”

The man laughed softly.

“You sound just like him.”

The call ended.

Sarah immediately signaled to the security team.

“Did you trace it?” Victoria asked.

“Not yet. It came through an encrypted routing service.”

Victoria placed the phone on the desk.

“Someone knew we were coming here.”

Sarah's eyes moved toward the open storage unit.

“That means the account records were compromised, or someone has been watching us.”

A loud crash echoed from the far end of the corridor.

One of the agents ran toward the entrance.

“Movement outside!”

Sarah pulled Victoria away from the doorway.

A vehicle engine roared beyond the facility gates. Through the narrow corridor window, Victoria saw a black SUV accelerating away from the building.

“Get the license plate!” Sarah shouted.

The second agent ran outside, but the vehicle had already disappeared onto the road.

Victoria looked back at the box.

The evidence was still there.

For the moment.

But the message was clear. Someone had known about the storage unit, and someone was willing to take risks to prevent the truth from reaching the public.

As the team secured the documents, Sarah's phone rang.

She answered, listened for several seconds, then turned pale.

“What happened?” Victoria asked.

Sarah lowered the phone.

“It's Ryan Mitchell.”

“Is he safe?”

“He is, but his father has disappeared.”

Victoria felt her stomach tighten.

“Where was he?”

“At home. The protection team found the front door open. There are signs of a struggle, but no blood.”

“Have they searched the property?”

“They're searching now.”

Victoria looked at the evidence box.

The enemy had moved quickly.

First Thomas Miller. Now Ryan's father.

They were not merely trying to stop the investigation. They were attacking the people who could help prove it.

“Get Ryan on the phone,” Victoria said.

Sarah dialed immediately.

Ryan answered on the first ring.

“Director Bennett?”

“Ryan, listen carefully. Are you somewhere secure?”

“Yes. I'm at the federal facility.”

“Good. Do not leave. Do not contact anyone outside the team. Your father is our priority, and we will find him.”

Ryan's voice broke.

“This is my fault. I should never have cooperated.”

“No,” Victoria replied firmly. “The responsibility belongs to the people who took him. You did the right thing by telling the truth.”
