Margaret wiped her eyes.
"There's something you need to know."
She reached into a drawer and removed an old photograph.
It showed the sheriff standing beside Charles Donovan.
But this time, another person appeared in the background.
A younger man wearing a dark suit.
Emily stared at the photograph.
"That's impossible."
Victoria looked at her.
"Who is he?"
Emily's voice trembled.
"That's my uncle."
"Your uncle?"
"Yes. My father's younger brother."
Margaret nodded slowly.
"His name is Michael Carter."
Emily shook her head.
"My father told me he died when I was a child."
Victoria examined the photograph.
"Do you know where he is now?"
Margaret hesitated.
Then she whispered:
"He's the man who helped arrange your father's disappearance."
The room fell silent.
Emily looked horrified.
Her entire understanding of her family had just collapsed.
But Victoria noticed something else.
On the back of the photograph was a handwritten address.
And beside it, a date scheduled for the following evening.
Sarah read the address aloud.
It belonged to a private property outside the county.
Victoria looked at the team.
"We're going there."
At 11:30 that night, an unmarked vehicle approached the property.
The house stood at the end of a narrow country road, surrounded by tall trees and an old iron fence.
There were no lights in the windows.
No cars in the driveway.
No visible signs of activity.
Victoria sat in the passenger seat while Sarah examined the surveillance photographs.
"According to the property records, the house belongs to a company registered under a false business address."
"Who owns the company?"
"One of Donovan's subsidiaries."
Victoria looked through the windshield.
"Then we have a connection."
A second vehicle arrived behind them.
Michael Grant stepped out and approached.
"We've confirmed movement inside the house."
"How many people?"
"At least two."
"Any identification?"
"Not yet."
Victoria looked toward the dark windows.
"Let's make sure we have the proper authorization before approaching."
Sarah nodded.
They waited for confirmation from the legal team.
Several minutes passed.
Then Michael's radio crackled.
"Movement at the rear entrance."
Everyone turned.
A figure had emerged from the house.
The person was carrying a large black bag.
They moved quickly toward a vehicle parked behind the building.
Sarah raised her binoculars.
Then her expression changed.
"Victoria."
"What?"
"Look at the man's face."
Victoria took the binoculars.
The man turned slightly beneath the outdoor security light.
She recognized him immediately.
It was Charles Donovan.
He threw the bag into the trunk.
Then he looked toward the road.
For one brief moment, his eyes appeared to meet Victoria's.
He froze.
Then he jumped into the vehicle and started the engine.
"He's leaving," Sarah said.
Michael immediately contacted the surveillance team.
The vehicle accelerated toward the main road.
Victoria watched the taillights disappear into the darkness.
But before anyone could follow, a second figure emerged from the house.
An older man.
He stood in the doorway, holding something in his right hand.
A flashlight illuminated his face.
Victoria felt her stomach tighten.
It was a face she had seen in the recovered photograph.
Michael Carter.
David Carter's brother.
The man Emily believed had died when she was a child.
He looked directly toward the federal vehicles.
Then he raised his hand.
He wasn't holding a weapon.
He was holding a photograph.
And he was silently asking them to come inside.
Victoria approached the house with Sarah and two federal agents.
Michael Carter remained at the entrance.
He looked exhausted, with deep lines around his eyes and gray hair covering most of his head.
"You shouldn't have come here," he said.
Victoria stopped several feet away.
"We're investigating your brother's disappearance."
Michael looked toward the road.
"Then you're already too late."
"Why?"
"Because Charles Donovan knows you've found the records."
"Where is David?"
Michael closed his eyes.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then he stepped aside.
"Come inside."
The house was almost empty.
A small table stood in the living room. Several photographs were scattered across it, along with maps and handwritten notes.
Victoria noticed one photograph immediately.
It showed David Carter standing beside a younger Michael.
They were smiling.
On the back was a date from fifteen years earlier.
Michael noticed her looking.
"My brother was a good man," he said. "He believed people could change things if they told the truth."
"Where is he now?"
Michael looked toward a closed door.
Then he answered.
"He's alive."
Victoria felt a surge of relief.
"Where?"
Michael pointed toward the door.
"Behind there."
Sarah immediately signaled the other agents.
The door was opened carefully.
