CHAPTER 9 — THE JUDGE'S ORDER

Judge Lawson received the investigative updates carefully.

She refused to turn her courtroom into a public spectacle.

But what happened inside it mattered.

Keller had struck a restrained defendant in open court.

There were witnesses.

There was video.

And the defendant's underlying charges had been dismissed after contradictory evidence emerged.

At a later hearing concerning the courtroom incident, Lawson addressed both attorneys.

"A courtroom cannot function if physical intimidation replaces lawful process."

She did not praise Simone for putting Keller on the floor.

She didn't need to.

The recording spoke for itself.

Instead, she focused on institutional responsibility.

A person in custody was still entitled to protection.

A uniform did not transform anger into authority.

And a defendant challenging an accusation was not permission for a witness to retaliate.

Outside the courthouse, reporters waited for Simone.

She walked past most of them.

One shouted:

"Ms. Brooks, do you feel vindicated?"

She stopped.

That word bothered her.

Vindicated.

As though the truth had given her back the night in detention.

As though dismissal erased the slap.

As though video evidence returned the trust she'd lost.

She turned.

"I feel believed because cameras existed."

Then she walked away.

The sentence appeared on the evening news.

CHAPTER 10 — KELLER'S INTERVIEW

Keller denied intentionally falsifying anything.

He said the roadside encounter had unfolded quickly.

He said Simone's movements looked threatening in the moment.
