The room became quiet.
“You don't have to scream to be heard.”
She held up a folder.
“And don't assume that because someone has authority, their memory is automatically more accurate than yours.”
She paused.
“Document what you can. Ask questions. Keep copies. Know your rights. And when you make a mistake, correct it.”
Someone raised a hand.
“What if they don't listen?”
Maya thought about that.
“Then keep looking for the person who will.”
That became the sentence people remembered.
Not because it was powerful.
Because it was practical.
Daniel Mercer eventually became one of the people responsible for training new recruits.
It was not a promotion he had expected.
During one training session, he stood before a classroom of young officers.
A recruit raised his hand.
“How do you know when someone is being disrespectful?”
Daniel paused.
Years earlier, he would have answered immediately.
Now he thought carefully.
“You don't always know.”
The recruits looked surprised.
Daniel continued.
“Sometimes someone is angry. Sometimes they're scared. Sometimes they're confused. Sometimes they're telling you that something you're saying is wrong.”
“So what do you do?”
“You listen.”
A recruit frowned.
“Even if they're challenging you?”
“Especially then.”
The room became silent.
Daniel walked to the board.
He wrote:
FACTS.
Then:
OBSERVATIONS.
Then:
ASSUMPTIONS.
“These are not the same thing,” he said.
He explained that facts could be documented.
Observations could be described.
Assumptions needed to be identified as assumptions.
“And if you don't know?”
“Say you don't know.”
One recruit asked, “Does that make you look weak?”
Daniel smiled.
“I used to think it did.”
“And now?”
“Now I think pretending to know something you don't is far more dangerous.”
After class, Lieutenant Harris stopped him.
“That was good.”
Daniel nodded.
“Thanks.”
“You meant every word.”
“Yes.”
Harris looked at him.
“Because of Reynolds?”
Daniel smiled faintly.
“Partly.”
He looked down the hallway.
“But mostly because I wish someone had taught me that lesson sooner.”
Two years after the incident, Maya received another message from Daniel.
