Adrian taught her another.

It could simply be discussed.

No mythology required.

CHAPTER FORTY-ONE

THE DEBT IS FINALLY GONE

Four years after the showroom, Jason made the final payment on his personal debt.

He sat at his desk staring at the confirmation.

BALANCE: $0.00

He expected euphoria.

Instead, he felt quiet.

Priya walked past.

“You look weird.”

“I paid it.”

“What?”

“All of it.”

She stopped.

“The disaster debt?”

“Yes.”

“Congratulations.”

“Thanks.”

“Celebrating?”

Jason thought.

“Maybe dinner.”

“Expensive?”

He laughed.

“No.”

That evening he called his mother.

“I paid everything off.”

Denise screamed.

His father got on the phone.

“Now what?”

Jason frowned.

“What do you mean?”

“You spent four years getting out.”

“Yes.”

“What are you getting into?”

Jason stared at the wall.

He had no answer.

For years, financial repair had been a mission.

Now the absence of crisis created space.

He began saving.

Not for a watch.

Not a car.

A house.

Small.

Practical.

Near his parents.

Then he changed his mind.

Instead, he created an emergency fund for his parents and paid for a home modification that made Michael's mobility easier.

The first time his father used the new stair lift, he complained.

“This makes me look old.”

“You are old.”

“Disrespectful.”

“Genetics.”

Denise laughed.

Jason watched them.

Five years earlier, he might have purchased a luxury car and posted it online.

Now he felt more pride watching his father reach the second floor safely.

Nobody on Instagram cared.

That made the pride cleaner.

CHAPTER FORTY-TWO

THE OFFER

One morning, Priya entered Jason's office.

“I want you to become partner.”

Jason stared.

“What?”

“You heard me.”

“At the firm?”

“No, Jason. At a bakery.”

He smiled.

“Why?”

“Because you're good.”

“That simple?”

“No.”

She sat.

“You're patient with clients.”

“You admit what you don't know.”

“You've brought in business.”

“And most importantly, you finally stopped trying to sound like the smartest person in every room.”

Jason laughed.

“What percentage?”

Priya told him.

It was meaningful.

Not life-changing wealth.

Not Vanguard.

But ownership.

Real ownership.

Jason looked at the document.

Five years earlier, he would have calculated how the title sounded at parties.

PARTNER.

He would have imagined business cards.

Status.

Today he asked:

“What responsibilities come with it?”

Priya smiled.

“That answer is why I'm offering.”

Jason accepted.

He called his parents.

Then Andrew Keller.

His former Vanguard manager answered.

“Mercer.”

“You still have my number?”

“I maintain records.”

“I made partner.”

A pause.

“At the small firm?”

“Yes.”

Andrew laughed warmly.

“Congratulations.”

“Thanks.”

“Happy?”

Jason considered.

“Yes.”

“Then you finally got promoted.”

Jason understood.

The promotion wasn't the title.

It was the ability to receive it without needing it to prove he mattered.

The strange intersection of their lives returned one final time.

Lily's scholarship foundation held its tenth-anniversary fundraiser.

Chloe's foundation had become a major partner.

Ethan Morales, now a senior engineer at Aurelius, would give the keynote.

Adrian planned to attend with Lily.

Weeks before the event, the foundation's financial-advisory firm changed.

The new partner handling part of the philanthropic asset structure was Jason Mercer.

Nobody planned it.

At least, Lily believed nobody did.

When the guest list reached her, she saw the name.

Jason Mercer — Partner, Shah Mercer Advisory

She stared at it.

Adrian, sitting across the room, noticed.

“What?”

She handed him the tablet.

He read.

“The ex.”

“Yes.”

“You want me to break his legs?”

Lily burst out laughing.

“What?”

“I thought this was what supportive partners said.”

“No.”

“Good. I'm not athletic.”

Lily looked back at the name.

“Are you uncomfortable?”

Adrian asked.

“No.”

“Liar.”

“I'm not afraid.”

“Different.”

She nodded.

“I don't know what seeing him in that setting will feel like.”

Adrian shrugged.

“Then you'll find out.”

“You're really okay?”

“He's part of your past.”

“That doesn't bother you?”

“It would bother me if you were secretly planning to run away with him.”

“I am not.”

“Then we're good.”

Lily smiled.

“You're irritatingly secure.”

“Years of mediocrity.”

She threw a pillow at him.

The event was held in a converted industrial building in Brooklyn.

No crystal ballroom.

No luxury hotel.

Engineering students displayed prototypes beside scholarship donors.

Ethan stood beside a lightweight drivetrain model explaining energy recovery to teenagers.

Chloe arrived with her husband.

A history teacher named Nathan.

Jason arrived alone.

No flashy watch.

Dark suit.

Simple.

When he saw Lily across the room, he stopped.

She stood beside Adrian.

Jason understood immediately.

A strange ache passed through him.

Not jealousy exactly.

The recognition of a door permanently closed.

Then Lily saw him.

She smiled politely.

Jason approached.

“Hi.”

“Hi.”

“Adrian,” Lily said, “this is Jason.”

They shook hands.

Adrian said:

“I've heard about you.”

Jason laughed nervously.

“I was afraid of that.”

“Mostly the car.”

“Of course.”

Lily smiled.

Jason looked around.

“This is incredible.”

“You helped structure part of the fund.”

“My firm did.”

“Your name is on the engagement letter.”

“Still reading everything.”

“Yes.”

Jason glanced toward Chloe.

She saw him.

For a second both hesitated.

Then Chloe walked over.

“Jason.”

“Chloe.”

Nathan extended a hand.

“Nathan.”

“Jason.”

Chloe looked at Jason.

“You look well.”

“So do you.”

Silence.

Then Jason said:

“I owe you another apology.”

Chloe shook her head.

“No.”

He frowned.

“You already gave the formal one. My lawyers loved it.”

Everyone laughed.

Chloe continued.

“We're fine.”

Jason nodded.

“Good.”

Nathan looked between them.

“I feel like I entered season six.”

Adrian replied:

“I got the recap.”
