Richard tried to smile.

“If I had known who you were—”

Eleanor raised her hand.

“Please don’t finish that sentence.”

He stopped.

“If you had known who I was, you would have treated me differently.”

Richard looked down.

“And that is precisely the problem.”

The investors said nothing.

Michael stepped away, leaving Eleanor standing before Richard’s table.

She looked at the empty chair beside him.

“May I?”

Richard immediately pulled it out.

Eleanor smiled faintly.

“Interesting.”

He hesitated.

“What?”

“You were willing to remove me from my chair twenty minutes ago.”

Richard felt his face burn.

“Mrs. Grant, I apologize.”

“For what?”

“For my behavior.”

“What behavior?”

Richard looked uncomfortable.

Gregory watched him carefully.

Eleanor waited.

Finally, Richard said, “I judged you.”

“Yes.”

“I assumed you didn’t belong here.”

“Yes.”

“I spoke to you disrespectfully.”

“And?”

Richard swallowed.

“I tried to force you to leave because I thought your appearance was embarrassing.”

Eleanor nodded.

“That is more honest.”

Richard looked hopeful.

“I truly am sorry.”

“Perhaps.”

She opened her handbag.

Richard glanced at it.

Eleanor removed a small black-and-white photograph.

She placed it on the table.

The photograph showed a young woman standing beside a much younger man in front of a tiny grocery store.

“That was me,” she said.

Richard studied the picture.

“And that was my husband, Thomas.”

Eleanor smiled at the memory.

“We opened that store with three hundred dollars, borrowed shelves, and a refrigerator that broke every summer.”

Gregory leaned closer.

Richard remained silent.

“Thomas delivered groceries. I handled the books. Sometimes, we slept in the storage room because we couldn’t afford an apartment.”

Eleanor looked at Richard.

“Do you know what people used to say?”

He shook his head.

“They said we didn’t belong in certain places.”

Her fingers touched the edge of the photograph.

“They said people like us should be grateful for whatever room the world allowed us to enter.”

Richard felt something tighten in his chest.

Eleanor placed the photograph back into her handbag.

“Eventually, we built a business.”

She looked around the restaurant.

“A large one.”

Richard stared at her.

“But I never forgot what it felt like to be dismissed before anyone knew my name.”

Silence settled over the table.

Then Michael approached again.

“Mrs. Grant, your guest has arrived.”

Eleanor stood.

Richard looked toward the entrance.

An older man was walking through the restaurant.

Richard recognized him immediately.

Samuel Whitmore.

Chairman of Whitmore Holdings.

The largest potential investor in Richard’s development project.

Samuel smiled when he saw Eleanor.

“Ellie!”

Eleanor’s face brightened.

“Sam.”

Richard’s stomach dropped.

Samuel walked directly toward her and hugged her.

“Sorry I’m late.”

“You’re forgiven.”

Then Samuel noticed Richard.

His smile disappeared.

“Richard.”

“Mr. Whitmore.”

Samuel looked at Eleanor.

Then at Michael.

“What happened?”

Eleanor said nothing.

Richard closed his eyes.

He knew he had two choices.

Lie.

Or tell the truth.

For the first time in years, he chose the second.

Richard told Samuel everything.

He did not soften the story.

He did not claim that Eleanor had misunderstood him.

He did not blame stress, alcohol, or a difficult day.

He simply described what he had done.

When he finished, Samuel Whitmore stared at him for several seconds.

Then he turned toward Eleanor.

“Is that accurate?”

Eleanor nodded.

“Yes.”

Samuel’s jaw tightened.

Richard knew that expression.

He had seen it during failed negotiations.

Deals rarely survived it.

“Richard,” Samuel said quietly, “do you understand what you’ve done?”

“Yes.”

“I don’t think you do.”

Richard remained silent.

Samuel pulled out a chair.
