He Thought He Could Humiliate Her in Front of Everyone… But He Didn’t Know Who She Was.
Chapter 5
Richard grabbed his coat.
“And Mr. Halston?”
“Yes?”
“Wear comfortable shoes.”
Richard arrived at the Riverside Community Center at exactly nine.
The building was old but well maintained. Children played basketball outside. Volunteers carried boxes of food through the entrance. A group of teenagers sat on the steps laughing over something on a phone.
There were no marble floors.
No chandeliers.
No security guards.
Richard wondered if he had the correct address.
Then he saw Eleanor.
She stood near the entrance wearing jeans, a plain sweater, and sneakers.
Richard stared.
She smiled.
“Surprised?”
“A little.”
“You should try it sometime.”
“What?”
“Looking different from what people expect.”
Richard almost smiled.
He had the good sense not to.
“What am I doing here?”
Eleanor handed him a clipboard.
“Working.”
“Working?”
“Yes.”
“I run a company.”
“Congratulations.”
Richard looked at the clipboard.
It listed boxes that needed to be unloaded from a truck.
He looked back at her.
“You want me to carry boxes?”
“I want you to decide.”
Richard understood.
If he left, she would learn something.
If he stayed, she would learn something else.
He removed his suit jacket.
“Where’s the truck?”
For the next three hours, Richard carried food, sorted supplies, cleaned tables, and assembled chairs for an afternoon program.
No one treated him like a famous businessman.
Most people had no idea who he was.
At first, Richard found that uncomfortable.
Then strangely peaceful.
Around noon, he sat outside with a bottle of water.
A teenage boy approached.
“You’re doing it wrong.”
Richard looked up.
“Doing what?”
“The chairs.”
The boy pointed toward the stack.
“You put the heavy ones on the bottom.”
Richard laughed.
“Helpful.”
“I’m helpful when people ask.”
Richard stood.
“Show me.”
The boy demonstrated.
His name was Jordan.
He was seventeen and attended a local public school.
During their conversation, Richard learned that Jordan wanted to study engineering.
“Where are you applying?”
“Everywhere.”
“Any favorites?”
Jordan named several universities.
Richard knew the tuition costs.
“Scholarships?”
Jordan shrugged.
“I’ll figure it out.”
Eleanor appeared beside them.
“Jordan’s one of our scholarship candidates.”
Richard looked at her.
“Our?”
“The foundation.”
“You have a foundation?”
“Several.”
Richard realized how little he knew about Eleanor Grant.
He had judged her entire life in less than thirty seconds.
That evening, Eleanor took him on a tour of several projects.
Affordable housing.
A job-training center.
A small business program.
A clinic.
Everywhere they went, people greeted her.
Not because she was wealthy.
Because she remembered them.
She knew who had started new jobs.
Who had children.
Who needed help.
Richard finally asked, “Why are you showing me this?”
Eleanor stopped walking.
“Because your company wants to build luxury apartments three blocks from here.”
Richard nodded.
“And?”
“The current proposal would require demolishing sixty-two affordable homes.”
Richard frowned.
“Our consultants said the residents could relocate.”
“Where?”
He had no answer.
Eleanor looked toward the buildings.
“Do you know what I have learned about people like you?”
Richard smiled without humor.
“That I’m predictable?”
“No.”
She looked directly into his eyes.
“You believe that a number on a spreadsheet is the same as a human consequence.”
Richard felt defensive.
“That isn’t fair.”
“Isn’t it?”
He thought about the project.
The projected profit.
The relocation costs.
The word residents printed in a report.
He had never thought about their names.
That night, Richard returned to his office and opened the development proposal again.
For the first time, he read every page.
