The HOA hired lawyers.
The courtroom was packed.
Eli sat beside Emma.
Across the room, Richard Caldwell avoided his eyes.
For the first time, he looked uncertain.
The evidence took three hours.
The old easement.
The property maps.
The planning documents.
The recording.
Marcus testified.
Claire testified.
Then Sheriff Avery testified about the barn fire.
The judge listened carefully.
When the recording played, nobody moved.
Richard's attorney objected.
The objection was overruled.
The room remained silent.
Finally, the judge asked:
"Mr. Caldwell, do you have an explanation?"
Richard stood.
His face was pale.
"My client was discussing hypothetical strategies."
The judge looked at him.
"And the fire?"
"We have no evidence connecting Mr. Caldwell to the fire."
Sheriff Avery stood.
"We have evidence."
He placed a file on the table.
"Phone records."
The room went quiet.
The investigation had traced communications between a contractor and one of Caldwell's employees.
The contractor had been present near the barn the night of the fire.
Eli stared forward.
He didn't feel victorious.
He felt tired.
Very tired.
After the hearing, the development project was suspended.
The judge issued an order protecting the agricultural easement.
The county reopened the zoning review.
Outside the courthouse, reporters gathered.
Eli ignored them.
Claire approached.
"It's over."
Eli shook his head.
