He looked at her.

"What things?"

"Everything."

Eli laughed.

"That's impossible."

She frowned.

"Why?"

"Because things change."

Lily looked toward the houses.

"Like the neighborhood?"

"Exactly."

She thought about it.

"Then why do we keep the farm?"

Eli looked across the fields.

He had spent his whole life trying to preserve what his grandfather had built.

Now he understood.

The farm wasn't the buildings.

It wasn't the equipment.

It wasn't even the land.

It was the willingness to keep building after something was lost.

He handed Lily the notebook.

"Write this down."

"What?"

"Nothing stays the same."

He smiled.

"But some things are worth carrying forward."

She carefully wrote the sentence.

Then she looked up.

"Is that what you did?"

Eli nodded.

"Yes."

"Did you do a good job?"

Eli looked at the fields.

At the road.

At the farmhouse.

At the barn rebuilt by people who once thought they had nothing in common.

"I think we all did."

On the twentieth anniversary of the farm market, Willow Ridge hosted a celebration.

There were food stalls.

Music.

Children playing.

Farmers selling produce.

Residents walking freely across the property line.

The old gravel road remained.

But it no longer felt like a boundary.

A wooden sign stood beside it.

HARLAND COMMUNITY ROAD

Below that were three words:

Neighbors. Farmers. Family.

Eli stood beneath the sign.

He was older now.

His hands were still weathered.

His shoulders slower.

But his eyes remained steady.

Emma approached.

"You know what Mom would say?"

Eli smiled.

"What?"

"That you were too stubborn."

He laughed.

"She'd be right."

Claire joined them.
