When asked whether Victoria should be prosecuted, he said:
“That is for the appropriate authorities to determine.”
When asked whether he wanted revenge, he answered:
“No.”
“Then what do you want?”
Marcus thought for a moment.
“I want the rules to mean the same thing for everyone.”
That sentence spread through the neighborhood.

Lila had not known about the glass until everything became public.
When Marcus told her, she cried.
“I could've gotten hurt.”
“I know.”
“Why would she do that?”
Marcus sat beside her.
“I don't know.”
“Because of you?”
“Maybe.”
Lila looked at him.
“Did you do something wrong?”
“No.”
“Then why?”
Marcus didn't have an easy answer.
“Sometimes people don't like being challenged.”
Lila thought about it.
“Are you scared?”
Marcus smiled.
“A little.”
She looked surprised.
“You are?”
“Of course.”
“But you don't act scared.”
“That doesn't mean I don't feel it.”
Lila nodded.
Marcus continued:
“Being brave doesn't mean you don't feel fear.”
“It means?”
“It means you don't let fear decide what you do.”
Lila looked toward the pool.
“Will we swim again?”
Marcus smiled.
“Absolutely.”
But first, he rebuilt the fence.
Not because Victoria had won.
Because Lila deserved a safe backyard.
