Marcus stared for several seconds.
Then he walked through the gate.
“Caroline.”
She turned.
Her smile vanished.
“Marcus.”
“You're home,” she said.
Marcus looked around.
“Yes.”
His voice was calm.
“Apparently I am.”
Caroline sighed.
“Don't make this dramatic.”
Marcus looked at the people swimming in his pool.
“Why are there strangers in my backyard?”
Caroline crossed her arms.
“This is a neighborhood event.”
“Did I approve it?”
She paused.
That pause told him everything.
“You didn't ask me,” she finally said.
Marcus stared at her.
“The HOA does not own my property.”
Caroline smiled.
“You're misunderstanding your role in this community.”
“My role?”
“As a homeowner.”
Marcus glanced around again.
“No. I understand it perfectly.”
He pointed toward the gate.
“You entered my property without permission.”
Several guests stopped talking.
Caroline lowered her voice.
“This is about cooperation.”
Marcus shook his head.
“No.”
He looked directly at her.
“This is about permission.”
For the first time, Caroline seemed uncertain.
Marcus noticed the security camera mounted beneath the patio roof.
Her eyes followed his.
“What are you doing?”
“Remembering.”
“Remembering what?”
“That everything happening here is being recorded.”
Her expression changed.
Marcus walked toward the pool controls.
Caroline stepped forward.
“Don't.”
He stopped.
“Why?”
“Because this will make you look unreasonable.”
Marcus looked at her.
“You brought strangers into my home.”
He pressed the switch.
The pool lights went dark.
The music stopped.
Silence fell across the backyard.
Marcus turned toward the guests.
“The event is over.”
Nobody argued.
Because suddenly everyone understood whose property they were standing on.
The Evidence
The following morning, Marcus received an official HOA notice.
He almost laughed when he read it.
The complaint accused him of disrupting a community gathering and creating an “unwelcoming atmosphere.”
He forwarded it to his attorney, Daniel Parker.
Daniel called twenty minutes later.
“She entered your property?”
“Yes.”
“Without permission?”
“Yes.”
“And now the HOA is filing a complaint against you because you objected?”
“That's what it says.”
Daniel was silent for a moment.
Then he laughed.
“What?”
“She may have created the evidence against herself.”
Marcus didn't find it funny.
