Daniel told him not to respond emotionally.
“Save everything.”
Marcus followed the advice.
He saved Caroline's emails.
The HOA notices.
Meeting agendas.
Old correspondence.
He downloaded every available security-camera recording.
There were four cameras around the property.
One covered the driveway.
Another covered the side gate.
The third showed the patio.
The fourth covered the pool.
The footage was devastating.
It showed Caroline entering through the side gate.
She unlocked it herself.
Behind her came three HOA board members and several guests.
Then came tables.
Food.
Coolers.
Pool equipment.
One recording captured Caroline telling someone:
“Marcus is out of town. He won't mind.”
Another guest asked:
“Did he say we could use the pool?”
Caroline laughed.
“He'll understand when he sees how much everyone enjoys it.”
Marcus watched that sentence three times.
Daniel sat beside him.
“She knew you hadn't given permission.”
Marcus nodded.
“Clearly.”
“There's more.”
Daniel pointed toward another recording.
Caroline was speaking with two residents near the patio.
“We're trying to build community,” she said. “Some homeowners just need to understand that shared neighborhoods require shared sacrifice.”
Marcus frowned.
“My property isn't a shared resource.”
Daniel nodded.
“Exactly.”
But Daniel warned him.
“This is only the beginning.”
“What do you mean?”
“She'll probably escalate.”
Marcus stared at the screen.
He didn't want a war.
He didn't want attention.
He wanted his backyard back.
Unfortunately, Caroline appeared to want something else.
Three days later, another notice arrived.
This one claimed Marcus had violated HOA rules by installing unauthorized pool lighting.
He checked the rules.
The lights had been approved two years earlier.
Daniel found the approval letter.
Then another violation appeared.
Unauthorized landscaping.
Marcus checked.
The plants had been approved.
Then came a third.
Excessive outdoor furniture.
Daniel read the complaint and looked at him.
“Does your HOA have a rule limiting patio chairs?”
“No.”
“Then this one is particularly creative.”
Marcus smiled despite himself.
“Creative?”
“That's the polite word.”
The pattern became obvious.
Caroline wasn't enforcing rules.
She was searching for rules that could be used against Marcus.
And the more she pushed, the more evidence she created.
At the next HOA meeting, Caroline presented herself as the victim.
“Marcus Reed has become openly hostile toward the association.”
Marcus sat quietly.
She described the pool party as a misunderstanding.
She said she believed Marcus had given “informal approval.”
Then Daniel stood.
“Do you have that approval in writing?”
