Voss looked at Malik.
His expression changed.
"So you're Marcus's son."
Malik stepped forward.
Voss stared at him.
"You have his eyes."
Then he turned and walked away.
David moved to follow.
Reed stopped him.
"No."
"Why?"
"Because that's what he wants."
Back at the house, David connected the flash drive to the old laptop.
There was only one file.
**FINAL_MESSAGE.mp4**
Malik pressed play.
His father's face appeared on the screen.
Older than the photographs.
Tired.
But alive.
Malik stopped breathing.
"Hey, buddy."
The recording had been made years ago.
Marcus looked directly into the camera.
"If you're watching this, I didn't get the chance to explain."
Angela began crying quietly.
Marcus continued.
"I need you to know one thing first. None of this was your fault."
Malik stared at the screen.
"Something happened during my final deployment. Information was stolen. People inside the system were involved. I found evidence."
The recording paused briefly.
Marcus looked away.
"I thought I could handle it alone."
He shook his head.
"I was wrong."
He explained that he had hidden copies of evidence with people he trusted.
Reed.
David.
And Richard Whitmore.
Malik looked at his mother.
"Richard?"
Marcus continued.
"I know Richard isn't easy to like."
Angela gave a broken laugh.
"But he has integrity. When it mattered, he chose to help."
Malik looked down.
His opinion of the man across the street suddenly became complicated.
Marcus leaned closer to the camera.
"If someone tells you I died because of an accident, believe the report. But don't believe that the accident explains everything."
The video ended.
Silence filled the room.
Then someone knocked.
Everyone turned.
Richard stood outside.
He looked exhausted.
"I think it's time I told you what happened."
Richard entered the house.
For once, he wasn't carrying a clipboard.
He wasn't wearing his HOA jacket.
He looked like an ordinary man.
"I treated your father badly," he said.
Malik didn't answer.
Richard continued.
"I thought he was reckless. Difficult. Disrespectful."
Angela crossed her arms.
"You judged him."
"Yes."
