Chapter 8
They had eaten with him.
They had watched her.
Stein spoke.
“Give us the files, Miss Bennett. You can go home.”
“And Aiko?”
Stein’s expression changed.
“She knows too much.”
“So she doesn’t go home.”
“No.”
Amara felt the cold settle inside her.
She dropped the bag.
Victor stepped forward.
At that moment, Amara pressed the hidden button beneath her sleeve.
The signal went out.
Victor noticed.
“What was that?”
Nothing happened.
Amara smiled.
“Hopefully, something expensive for you.”
Victor lunged forward.
A loud crash echoed from the other side of the warehouse.
The doors burst open.
People ran inside.
Victor turned.
Amara stepped back.
But before the authorities could reach them, Stein grabbed her.
The recording device fell from beneath her jacket.
He pulled her toward the side exit.
“Move!”
Amara struggled.
Outside, rain hammered against the pavement.
A black car waited with its engine running.
Stein pushed her toward it.
Then a voice shouted.
“Amara!”
Kenji.
He came from nowhere.
His security team followed close behind.
Stein froze.
For one second, everyone stopped moving.
Then Victor drew a weapon.
The sound of a gunshot shattered the night.
Amara fell to the ground.
Kenji dropped beside her.
“Amara!”
“I’m fine,” she gasped.
But someone else was not.
Stein stood several feet away, staring at the blood spreading across his sleeve.
Victor had fired at Kenji.
Stein had stepped into the path.
He collapsed.
Victor ran.
Authorities chased him.
Amara looked at Stein.
“Why?”
He gave a weak laugh.
“Maybe because I liked you.”
Kenji knelt beside him.
“You betrayed me.”
Stein closed his eyes.
“I know.”
“Why?”
Stein looked toward the rain-filled sky.
“Because I spent twenty years helping you build an empire.”
Kenji’s face changed.
“And then?”
“And then I realized I would never own any of it.”
His breathing became weaker.
“The others promised me more.”
Kenji looked at him.
“And was it worth it?”
Stein smiled bitterly.
“Ask me tomorrow.”
But tomorrow never came for Harold Stein.
As the authorities led Victor away, Amara stood beside Kenji in the rain.
The flash drive was safe.
The recordings were intact.
And for the first time, the people behind the conspiracy had begun to fall.
But Amara knew one thing.
Victor’s words would not disappear.
Was Kenji truly innocent?
Or had she simply traded one powerful man’s arrogance for another man’s secrets?
The evidence spread quickly.
Within forty-eight hours, Takamori Global was no longer simply a successful international corporation.
It was the subject of investigations.
Financial reporters surrounded the company headquarters.
Government officials requested documents.
Several executives resigned before they could be questioned.
Others disappeared from public view entirely.
Victor Hale was arrested.
And the flash drive Aiko had risked everything to protect became the beginning of a legal disaster.
But Amara could not stop thinking about what Victor had said.
Your billionaire friend built an empire. Did you really believe his hands were clean?
Three days later, she went to see Kenji.
Not because he asked.
Because she needed answers.
He was alone in his office.
No assistants.
No executives.
No expensive performance of power.
Just Kenji Takamori standing beside a window.
He turned when she entered.
“You look better.”
“You look terrible.”
He smiled.
“Honesty again.”
Amara closed the door.
“Were you involved?”
Kenji’s smile disappeared.
“In what?”
“The things Victor said.”
He looked away.
Amara waited.
Finally, Kenji walked toward his desk.
“When my company was young, I made decisions I am not proud of.”
“That isn’t an answer.”
“No.”
He sat down.
“Then I will give you one.”
For the next hour, Kenji told her everything.
Not everything Victor claimed was true.
Some of it was.
Years earlier, Takamori Global had partnered with companies that used corrupt practices. Kenji had ignored warning signs because growth mattered more to him than questions.
He had not personally ordered illegal actions.
But he had created an environment where people believed results mattered more than methods.
And when the company became successful, he convinced himself that he could correct those mistakes later.
Later had become years.
Years had become an empire.
Amara listened without interrupting.
When he finished, she said, “So you’re guilty.”
Kenji nodded.
“Of some things.”
“That’s convenient.”
“It is not meant to be.”
He opened a folder on his desk.
Inside was a prepared statement.
“What is this?”
“My resignation.”
