Karen never understood the difference.
Chapter 1
That distinction saved me years later. Karen never understood the difference.
To her, anything residents used long enough became HOA property. A road. A gate. A ditch. A view. Even respect.
The trouble started small. It always does. First, she complained about mud on the road after a rain. Then, she complained about my fuel trailer being visible from one of the lake homes. Then, she complained that my service truck turned too wide near the curve. Finally, she complained that grain trucks created "visual disruption."
Then came the emails.
-
Visual blight.
-
Neighborhood character.
-
Property values.
-
Unauthorized commercial activity.
-
Unregulated industrial movement.
-
Community impact.
Every phrase sounded polished, but every phrase meant the same thing: Karen wanted my farm to behave like decoration. And when it did not, she decided to use the HOA like a weapon.
The first letter came in March. It was printed on thick HOA letterhead and sent by certified mail. At the top, it read: NOTICE OF COMMUNITY IMPACT VIOLATION.
I almost laughed when I saw it. My farm was not in Willow Ridge Estates. My land had never joined their HOA. My deed was older than their bylaws. Older than their clubhouse. Older than the fake stone sign at the front entrance.
But Karen wrote like she owned the place. She claimed my equipment yard created a negative visual impact on surrounding residential property. She stated that early-morning equipment movement violated "quiet enjoyment expectations," and that my grain trucks created safety concerns for families.
She demanded that I move my equipment behind a new screening fence approved by the HOA architectural committee. At the bottom, she copied the HOA attorney and marked it PRE-ENFORCEMENT NOTICE.
That was the first clue. Karen was not just complaining; she was building a paper trail.
So, I answered with one sentence:
"Harland Farms is not part of your HOA. Do not contact me regarding HOA violations again."
For two weeks, there was silence.
Then Karen escalated. She started appearing at the edge of my equipment yard with board members, taking pictures through the fence. She brought a man she called a "safety consultant," though he looked more like somebody’s brother-in-law in a clean reflective vest. She placed orange cones near the road shoulder and told residents my farm traffic was unregulated.
One afternoon, I found her standing near my gate while I was greasing the combine. She wrinkled her nose like the smell of oil offended her.
"Mr. Harland," she said, "you need to understand this community has standards now."
I wiped my hands on a rag. "This was a farm before it was a community."
