"Graham," Helena started, her voice immediately adopting a wounded, fluttering tone. "You're finally here. We were just—"

"Take the plates, Corinne," Graham repeated, stepping into the room. He didn't look at his mother. His eyes were locked on his sister.

Corinne bristled, her chin tilting up defensively. "She offered to help, Graham. Don't make a scene. It's just a few dishes."

Graham walked directly to Maren. He didn't wait for Corinne. He reached out and gently took the heavy stack of china from Maren's trembling hands. For a second, he held them, looking at the congealed grease, the sheer weight of the ceramic. Then, with a deliberate, chilling calmness, he opened his hands and let the plates drop to the hardwood floor.

The crash was deafening. Porcelain shattered into a hundred jagged shards, flying across the polished oak. Sauce splattered against the cream-colored walls and the hem of Corinne's expensive dress. The children in the hallway gasped. Matthew took a step back, his eyes wide.

"Graham!" Helena shrieked, pressing a hand to her chest. "Are you insane? Those were your grandmother's—"

"I don't care," Graham said, his voice dropping to a low, dangerous register. He turned to face his mother and sister, shielding Maren behind his back. "I told you Maren was experiencing abdominal pains last week. I told you her doctor put her on lifting restrictions. I told you this when I RSVP'd, and I asked you to make sure she was comfortable until I got here."

"Oh, please," Corinne scoffed, though she took a step back from the broken glass. "She's pregnant, not terminally ill. Women have been carrying plates for centuries."

"Women in this family, perhaps, are accustomed to carrying unnecessary burdens," Graham said coldly. "But my wife is not one of them. And she never will be."

He turned to Maren, his expression softening instantly. "Are you okay? Do you need to sit down?"

Maren shook her head, fighting back the tears that had suddenly rushed to her eyes. Not tears of humiliation, but of overwhelming relief. "I just want to go home."

"We're going," Graham said. He placed a hand on the small of her back, guiding her toward the hallway.

"Graham Mercer, if you walk out of this house right now, you are ruining your sister's birthday," Helena warned, her voice trembling with genuine rage now. The genteel mask had slipped entirely. "You are choosing this... this drama over your own family."

Graham stopped at the door. He looked back at Helena, and for the first time, Maren saw something in his eyes that looked like profound pity. "You've never understood what family is, Mother. That's why you're so terrified of losing control over this one."

He opened the front door, leading Maren out into the cool evening air, leaving the shattered pieces of his mother's legacy scattered across the dining room floor.

The drive home was wrapped in a heavy, charged silence. Maren watched the streetlights wash over Graham’s profile. His jaw was locked, his knuckles white against the steering wheel. She knew him well enough to know he wasn't angry with her; he was furious at them, and perhaps at himself for not being there sooner.

When they finally arrived at their quiet, suburban home, the contrast to Corinne's ostentatious mansion was physically relieving. Graham immediately guided Maren to the sofa, fetching a glass of water and a warm blanket. He knelt in front of her, resting his hands gently on her swollen belly.

"I'm so sorry, Maren," he whispered, his voice cracking slightly. "I thought... I hoped they would at least maintain a basic level of decency. I shouldn't have let you go alone."

"It's not your fault," Maren said softly, threading her fingers through his dark hair. "I just... I don't understand it, Graham. I've tried everything. I've smiled at the insults, I've brought the gifts, I've agreed with everything Helena says. Why does she hate me so much? What did I do?"
