Graham sighed, resting his forehead against her knees. "It's not you, Maren. It was never you."

"Then who is it?"

He was quiet for a long time. The grandfather clock in the hallway ticked away the seconds. Finally, he looked up, his eyes shadowed with old, heavy grief. "She doesn't hate you. She hates me. You're just collateral damage."

Maren stared at him, bewildered. "That's impossible. You're her son. She brags about your promotions, your house, your success to anyone who will listen."

"She brags about the trophies she feels she earned," Graham corrected bitterly. "She likes the idea of a successful son. But she has never loved me, Maren. Not the way she loves Corinne. I've known it since I was a little boy. I just didn't know why until a few years ago."

Maren felt a chill trace its way down her spine. "Graham... what are you talking about?"

He stood up, pacing the length of the living room. "My father, Richard, was a complex man. You know he died when I was in college. What you don't know, what nobody talks about, is that his marriage to Helena was essentially a business transaction arranged by their families. They were wealthy, they merged assets, and they were miserable."

Graham stopped by the window, staring out into the dark yard. "My father had a secretary. Her name was Evelyn. They fell in love. Deeply, tragically in love. They had an affair that lasted for three years."

Maren's breath caught in her throat. She looked at her husband, the pieces suddenly beginning to shift and align into a terrifying new picture.

"Evelyn got pregnant," Graham continued, his voice devoid of emotion, a defense mechanism he had clearly perfected over years of carrying this secret. "She died in childbirth due to severe complications. My father was devastated. He couldn't let his son go into the foster system. So, he brought the baby home."

Graham turned to face Maren, the truth hanging in the air between them like a ghost. "Helena isn't my biological mother, Maren. I am the living, breathing proof of her husband's infidelity. I am the son of the woman he actually loved."

The revelation hit Maren with the force of a physical blow. Suddenly, every micro-aggression, every cold glance, every impossible standard Helena had set for Graham and, by extension, Maren, made sickening sense. Helena had spent thirty-five years raising a child who wore the face of her ultimate humiliation.

"Graham..." Maren breathed, struggling to push herself up from the couch. She walked over to him, wrapping her arms around his waist from behind, resting her cheek against his back. "Why didn't you ever tell me?"

"Because it's shameful," he admitted, his voice rough. "Because for my entire life, I believed it was my fault. When a child is treated like a burden, they assume they are inherently unlovable. It wasn't until my father passed away and left me a letter in his will that I learned the truth. He explained everything. He begged for my forgiveness for leaving me with her."

"Where is the letter?" Maren asked softly.

"In my study. Locked in the bottom drawer of the desk. I haven't looked at it since the day I read it."

The next morning, while Graham was at the office making up for the missed hours, Maren found herself standing in front of his mahogany desk. She knew she shouldn't pry, but the maternal instinct within her—the fierce, protective urge that had been growing alongside her baby—demanded to understand the exact nature of the venom that had infected her husband's life. She needed to know what they were up against.

She found the small brass key hidden exactly where Graham always kept his spares, beneath the false bottom of a pen cup. The drawer slid open with a soft click. Inside, resting on top of a stack of old tax returns, was a heavy, cream-colored envelope. The name Graham was written on it in a sharp, elegant script.
