Someone shouted.
The elderly man demanded that Miller stop.
The woman began crying openly.
Davis got back to his feet.
"Let him go!"
Miller ignored everyone.
Daniel closed his eyes for half a second.
He thought about the mayor.
He thought about the condition he had made.
He thought about the oath he had taken decades earlier.
Then he opened his eyes.
"Officer Miller."
"What?"
"Look at me."
Miller did.
Daniel's voice was quiet.
"You have one chance to stop this."
Miller sneered.
"Or what?"
Daniel reached into the inside pocket of his jacket.
Miller's hand moved toward his belt.
Davis froze.
Daniel slowly pulled out a sealed envelope.
He held it between two fingers.
"Read the name."
Miller stared at the envelope.
"What is this?"
"Read it."
Miller snatched it.
He looked at the front.
His eyes moved across the printed words.
Then stopped.
His face changed.
The arrogance disappeared.
His mouth opened slightly.
Davis stepped closer.
"What does it say?"
Miller did not answer.
Daniel took the envelope back.
Then he opened it.
Inside was an official appointment letter.
Daniel held it up.
"Daniel Reed."
He paused.
"Incoming Chief of Police, Graymont Police Department."
Nobody spoke.
The lobby seemed to lose all sound.
