Thornton’s face went from red to white. Not slowly, all at once. Like someone pulled a plug. And one more thing. Nicole lifted her head off the hood. oil stain on her forehead, red dress torn at the strap, mascara smudged.

She looked nothing like a federal judge, but her voice, her voice was a gavel. I’m federal judge Nicole Shaw, 11th Circuit Court of Appeals. Every single thing you’ve done in the last 14 minutes, the unlawful detention, the illegal search, the sexual assault, will be presented before a federal grand jury. Not your town court. Not your buddy at the county office.

Federal. Lawson’s gloves were off. Both hands up, palms out like he was the one being arrested. Sarge. Sarge.

I didn’t. You told me to shut up. Thornton snapped. But his voice cracked on the second word. Greer backed away from Nicole so fast he stumbled over his own boot.

Then they heard it. Tires on asphalt. Fast coming from the north. Two black Chevrolet Suburbans turned off the two-lane road and into the gas station lot. No sirens, no lights, just speed and weight and purpose.

They stopped in a V formation blocking the cruiser. Four doors opened. Four agents stepped out, dark suits, Kevlar underneath, badges on their belts. The lead agent, a tall woman with her hair pulled back, walked straight past Thornton like he wasn’t there. She went to Audrey, uncuffed her, helped her stand.

Agent Shaw, are you hurt? Audrey rubbed her wrists. Red lines where the cuffs had been. I’m okay. The lead agent turned to Nicole, uncuffed her.

Nicole stood up slowly. Her legs almost gave out. Audrey caught her. I got you, Audrey said. I got you.

Nicole leaned into her sister, shaking. The courtroom voice was gone. She was just a woman now. A woman whose dress was torn and whose forehead had a burn mark from a police cruiser hood. The lead agent turned to the three officers.

Thornton was standing very still. His hand had drifted to his holster, pure reflex. Lawson was behind him, almost hiding. Greer was staring at the ground. Sergeant Wade Thornton, Officer Brett Lawson, Officer Kyle Greer.

The lead agent’s voice was flat, professional, devastating. Badges on the ground, weapons on the ground, hands where I can see them now. Thornton didn’t move. Sergeant, I’m not going to ask you again. Thornton’s hand came off his holster slowly.

He unclipped his badge, looked at it. the metal that had protected him for 22 years, that had let him do whatever he wanted to whoever he wanted in this town. He put it on the ground. Lawson and Greer followed. Three badges, three guns, three sets of handcuffs pulled from the same belts that had held them an hour ago. The lead agent cuffed Thornton first.
