By sunset, half the posts were installed.

By Monday, the fence stood.

And by the following weekend, nearly six feet of my side yard had disappeared behind Denise Holloway's brand-new privacy fence.

Wasted Space

Denise didn't behave as though she had made a mistake.

She behaved as though she had won.

She planted roses along the inside of the fence.

She installed a stone walkway beneath my oak tree.

She ran irrigation lines through the flower bed.

Then she placed two white Adirondack chairs under my tree.

Finally, she posted a photograph in the neighborhood group.

Finally creating beauty where there used to be wasted space.

I stared at the words for several seconds.

Wasted space.

My property.

My oak tree.

My grass.

I wanted to tear the fence down myself.

I didn't.

Anger makes good fantasies and terrible evidence.

Instead, I documented everything.

I photographed the original stakes.

The post holes.

The installation.

The completed fence.

The roses.

The stone walkway.

The irrigation work.

I saved Denise's social media posts.

I made copies of my deed, survey, and subdivision plat.

Then I emailed her.

My message was short and polite.

I explained that the fence encroached onto my property and needed to be removed or relocated.

Twenty minutes later, she replied.

Ethan,
The fence was installed according to HOA boundary guidance and community standards. Your continued objection appears to be based on outdated documents. Please refrain from harassing contractors or interfering with approved improvements.

Outdated documents.

My recorded deed was now “outdated.”

I forwarded the entire exchange to the HOA board.

Three days later, I received my first violation.

According to Denise, I had:

  • interfered with approved property improvements,

  • created conflict with a neighboring homeowner,

  • and engaged in conduct detrimental to community harmony.

Community harmony.

People who do bad things love soft language.

It makes theft sound like landscaping.

It makes intimidation sound like leadership.

I appealed the violation.

The board scheduled a hearing.

I arrived with my binder.

Denise arrived with her smile.

The HOA Meeting

The clubhouse smelled like old coffee and carpet cleaner.
