Then she noticed the camera.

Her expression changed.

She pulled out her phone.

Twenty seconds later, mine rang.

Unknown number.

I ignored it.

Then the HOA office called.

I ignored that too.

Finally Karen shouted toward my house.

“Mr. Carter!”

I stayed behind the curtains.

“Mr. Carter!”

The gate remained silent.

After six minutes, she got back into her SUV.

She reversed.

Then she drove away.

The long way.

The way everyone else had been driving all along.

The HOA Comes to My Gate

By noon, the emails started.

Karen claimed I had illegally blocked established community access.

The HOA management company demanded a meeting.

Daniel requested copies of my documentation.

Rachel answered.

The road is private property. No access rights exist. Mr. Carter provided written notice. The gate is lawful. Any attempt to bypass or damage the gate will be treated as trespass and property damage.

Karen replied:

The HOA reserves all rights regarding obstruction of historic community passage.

Rachel answered with one sentence:

Please provide the recorded easement.

Karen didn't.

Because there wasn't one.

For three days, the gate worked perfectly.

Residents arrived, saw the sign, and turned around.

One man got out, read it, looked embarrassed, and left.

Karen returned every morning.

First she honked.

Then she called the HOA office.

On the third day, she parked in front of the gate for twenty minutes as though waiting for the gate to become emotionally uncomfortable.

It didn't.

On the fourth day, she arrived with Daniel and two board members.

I met them at the gate.

Rachel joined by phone.

Karen pointed at the gate.

“This is illegal.”
