“That won't be necessary.”

Sarah lowered her voice.

“Sir, perhaps there has been a misunderstanding.”

“There hasn't.”

“Please step out of the aisle so we can continue boarding.”

I didn't move.

“Please verify the manifest.”

She frowned.

“We can do that after everyone is seated.”

“No.”

I pointed at the seat.

“Before.”

The woman crossed her arms.

“This is ridiculous.”

I looked at her for the first time since she had shoved me.

“What is your name?”

She lifted her chin.

“Evelyn Harrington.”

I nodded.

“Thank you.”

She narrowed her eyes.

“For what?”

“For making sure I remember it.”

Sarah's expression hardened.

“Sir, I'm going to ask you one final time to step aside.”

I looked around the cabin.

Two hundred passengers were watching.

Some looked uncomfortable.

Some looked curious.

Some looked away.

And one teenager was still recording.

I took another slow breath.

Then I said six words.

“Call the purser and verify 1A.”

Sarah hesitated.

That hesitation lasted only two seconds.

But it would later become one of the most important moments of her career.

She turned toward the cockpit.

And I remained standing.

Quietly.

Patiently.

Waiting for the system to do what it was designed to do.

Verify.

Who belonged in Seat 1A?

And who didn't?

 The Name on the Manifest

The purser arrived less than a minute later.

His name was Daniel Reeves.

Unlike Sarah, Daniel didn't immediately choose a side.

He looked at the woman.

Then at me.

Then at the coffee staining my jeans.

“What happened?”

Evelyn answered first.

“This man attempted to take my seat.”

I said nothing.

Daniel looked at her.

“Your boarding pass, ma'am?”

She handed it over.

He scanned it.

His expression changed.

“Ms. Harrington, you're assigned to 1C.”

She blinked.

“What?”

“1C.”

She laughed.

“That can't be right.”

Daniel checked the scanner again.

“It is.”

She pointed at the seat.

“This is 1A.”

“Yes.”

“And I always sit on the left side.”

Daniel paused.

“1A is assigned to another passenger.”

Her eyes moved toward me.

“No.”

Daniel looked at me.

“May I see your boarding pass, sir?”

I handed it over.

He scanned the code.

The machine beeped.

A green confirmation appeared.

Daniel looked at the screen.

Then at me.

Then back at the screen.
