The woman shook her head.

Evelyn kept talking.

Then she looked at me.

I didn't look away.

She turned back.

A few minutes later, Sarah approached.

“Mr. Carter.”

“Yes?”

“I owe you an apology.”

I waited.

She looked uncomfortable.

“I should have verified the seat immediately.”

“Yes.”

“I made an assumption.”

“Yes.”

She swallowed.

“I apologize.”

I studied her face.

“Do you understand what assumption you made?”

She hesitated.

“No.”

“Then your apology is incomplete.”

Her cheeks reddened.

“I thought you were in the wrong cabin.”

“That wasn't the only assumption.”

She looked down.

Silence.

Finally, she said:

“No.”

I nodded.

“That matters.”

She walked away.

The aircraft began moving toward the runway.

Evelyn stared straight ahead.

Then her phone buzzed.

She looked at the screen.

Her face changed.

She stood abruptly.

“Excuse me!”

Sarah turned.

Evelyn held up her phone.

“There has been a mistake.”

Daniel came over.

“What kind of mistake?”

“My assistant just confirmed my reservation.”

She looked at me.

“Someone changed my seat.”

Daniel frowned.

“That doesn't appear possible.”

“My original booking was 1A.”

“According to the manifest, Mr. Carter has 1A.”

“I know what my booking said.”

Daniel looked at me.

I said nothing.

Evelyn's voice rose.

“I want this investigated.”

Daniel nodded.

“We will.”

She sat again.

I looked out the window.

The plane lifted from the runway.

Thirty thousand feet below us, nobody knew what had happened.

But someone on the ground already did.

Because the teenage girl's video had begun spreading.

And within an hour, the airline was going to have a problem much larger than a disputed seat.

 The Video

By the time we reached cruising altitude, the video had been viewed more than 200,000 times.

The teenager's name was Lily Bennett.

She was seventeen.

Her original intention had been simple.

Record a funny travel clip.

Instead, she had captured something that people recognized instantly.

The shove.

The coffee.

The insult.

The flight attendant's reaction.

And the moment Daniel confirmed that I owned Seat 1A.

The caption Lily added was simple:

“He had the ticket. She still told him where he belonged.”

I didn't know any of this until Daniel approached me with his tablet.

“Mr. Carter.”

“Yes?”

“There's something you should see.”

He showed me the screen.

I watched the video.

I didn't flinch.
