She Used Her Neighbor’s Pool Like It Belonged to the HOA — Then He Saw the Key in Her Hand
Chapter 1
Tom Harding woke to the distinct, unmistakable sound of laughter. At first, his
sleep-fogged brain tried to rationalize it. He thought the noise had come from the
television downstairs in the living room. He had fallen asleep quite late after spending the
entirety of Friday night reviewing complex commercial construction schedules, a habit he
had yet to break since his recent promotion. It was not at all unusual for him to leave the
living room TV running, the low hum of a late-night talk show acting as a white-noise
machine for his exhausted mind.
Then came the splash. It was a large, resonant splash. The kind of splash that sends
heavy ripples slapping against tile. Followed immediately by a woman shouting, “Oh my
God, Karen, that is freezing!” More laughter echoed, bouncing off the brick exterior of his
newly purchased home. Tom opened his eyes. The warm, golden sunlight of a North
Carolina morning pressed through the heavy blackout curtains of his upstairs master
bedroom. He squinted at the digital clock beside his bed. The glowing red numbers read
9:14 a.m.
Another heavy splash erupted from directly beneath his window. His backyard. Tom sat
up abruptly, the last remnants of sleep vanishing instantly. For several agonizing seconds,
he remained perfectly still, listening intently. Music had started now. It was a bouncy,
generic pop tune, not overwhelmingly loud enough to rattle the windowpanes, but certainly
loud enough that he could clearly distinguish the rhythmic thumping of the bass. Someone
laughed again, a high-pitched, piercing sound. A glass bottle clinked sharply against
another piece of glass or perhaps the stone decking.
Tom threw off the lightweight summer quilt, crossed the bedroom floor with heavy,
purposeful steps, and yanked aside the curtain. He stared down at his backyard oasis,
blinking in disbelief. Three women were in his swimming pool.
One woman floated lazily near the deep end, one arm draped over the edge, a bright
orange cocktail in her hand. Another sat comfortably inside a massive pink inflatable
flamingo ring, her feet kicking up small geysers of water. The third woman, clearly the
center of gravity for this impromptu gathering, reclined luxuriously across a giant white
inflatable swan, posing as if she had rented a private villa in Cabo San Lucas for the entire
weekend.
Tom just stared. He couldn't process the sheer audacity. The woman on the swan wore
oversized, dark designer sunglasses, a wide-brimmed straw sun hat that shielded her face,
and a vibrant floral swimsuit barely visible beneath a sheer white cover-up. Her perfectly
highlighted blond hair fell gracefully over one shoulder. As if sensing his gaze, she casually
lifted her cocktail glass, tilted her head to look directly up toward his second-story bedroom
window, and gave a cheerful, unbothered wave.
Tom let the curtain fall shut, his jaw setting into a hard line. “What the actual hell?” he
muttered to the empty room.
Just two short months earlier, that exact backyard had been the primary reason he
decided to purchase this specific property. Tom was forty-two years old. He had recently
been promoted to senior project manager at a highly respected commercial engineering
firm located just outside Raleigh. For the better part of the previous decade, he had
subjected himself to the miseries of shared walls—living in cramped apartments or generic
townhouses where every partition seemed thin enough to hear a neighbor’s argument,
their alarm clocks, and their terrible taste in music.
This house was supposed to be different. It was his sanctuary. Three spacious bedrooms,
a classic red-brick exterior, a large chef’s kitchen, all situated at the very end of a deeply
quiet, tree-lined cul-de-sac. And the crown jewel: behind a sturdy, eight-foot-tall cedar
privacy fence lay a pristine, private swimming pool completely surrounded by expensive
pale stone decking.
It was not a community pool. It was not a shared neighborhood amenity. There was no
public easement. Tom knew this as an absolute, undeniable fact because he had personally
read every single page, clause, and addendum of the closing and purchase documents. He
was a project manager; he always read everything. His coworkers often joked that Tom was
the kind of man who would read the manufacturer’s warranty on a coffee spoon before
daring to stir his morning brew.
The pool was clearly demarcated as part of Lot 17. His lot. His fence. His side gate. His
homeowner's insurance policy. His property taxes. His exclusive responsibility. His.
Fuming but maintaining a cold, calculated exterior, Tom pulled on a faded gray T-shirt, a
pair of athletic shorts, and his sneakers. He walked heavily down the carpeted stairs.
Through the sliding glass patio door in the kitchen, he could observe the intruders much
more clearly. One of the women had audaciously placed a waterproof Bluetooth speaker
right in the center of his expensive teak outdoor dining table. There were three large,
colorful tote bags carelessly tossed onto his lounge chairs. A rolling cooler sat brazenly
beside his stainless-steel gas grill. Someone had even had the nerve to open his
weatherproof storage cabinet and help themselves to his freshly washed, neatly folded pool
towels.
Tom unlocked and slid open the patio door. The track rumbled, announcing his arrival.
The three women looked over. “Morning,” Tom said, his voice flat, devoid of any genuine
warmth.
The blonde woman lounging on the swan lowered her oversized sunglasses slightly,
peering at him over the dark rims. “Morning,” she replied, her tone breezy and entirely
unbothered.
Tom stood on the threshold, waiting for the inevitable realization, the sudden blush of
intense embarrassment, the frantic apologies of people who had wandered onto the wrong
property. None came. The women simply looked at him, waiting for him to go back inside.
He stepped fully onto the stone deck. “This is private property.”
One of the friends, the one holding the cocktail near the deep end, finally stopped
smiling. A flicker of uncertainty crossed her face. But the woman on the swan did not lose
her smirk. She lifted her sunglasses back up and adjusted her hat. “Excuse me?”
“This backyard. The pool.” Tom pointed a firm finger toward the wooden side gate. “I
need all three of you to pack up your things and leave immediately.”
The blonde woman laughed. It wasn't a nervous chuckle. It was a loud, mocking sound
that grated against Tom's nerves. “Your pool?” she asked, dripping with condescension.
“Yes. My pool. On my property.”
She turned her head to look dramatically toward her friends. “Did you girls hear that?”
One friend looked increasingly uncomfortable, shrinking slightly into the water. The other,
the one in the flamingo, gave a small, hesitant laugh, unsure of whose side to take. The
blonde woman slowly, deliberately climbed off the inflatable swan and stepped onto the top
stair of the pool. Water cascaded down her tanned legs. She took her sweet time, making a
show of adjusting her sheer cover-up.
“My name is Karen Peton,” she announced, her chin raised, expecting the name to strike
reverence into his heart.
Tom crossed his arms and waited. Karen seemed visibly irritated when her name
produced absolutely no reaction from the tall, broad-shouldered man standing before her.
