She Used Her Neighbor’s Pool Like It Belonged to the HOA — Then He Saw the Key in Her Hand
Chapter 7
Over the loud country music echoing from his backyard, Tom heard the distinct, piercing
wail of police sirens approaching rapidly. He stood up, smoothed down his shirt, grabbed
his leather binder containing all the legal documentation, and walked toward the patio
door.
It was time to introduce Karen Peton to the consequences of her actions.
Chapter 7: The Eviction of the Queen
hree patrol cruisers came screaming down the cul-de-sac, their red and blue
lights flashing brilliantly against the bright summer day. They parked at haphazard
angles, effectively blocking the driveway and the street. Six uniformed police officers
practically leaped out of the vehicles, their hands resting cautiously on their duty belts as
they rushed toward the massive crowd spilling out of Tom’s broken gate.
The loud music in the backyard was abruptly cut off. The splashing ceased. The cheering
died in the throats of the partygoers as they turned to see the officers storming onto the
pool deck.
Karen, who was in the process of pouring herself a massive vodka cranberry, froze. But
her shock only lasted a second before her arrogant, entitled programming kicked back in.
She put down the cup and marched directly toward the lead officer, a stern-looking
sergeant.
“Officers, thank goodness you’re here,” Karen proclaimed loudly, adopting the tone of a
victimized monarch. “There has been a terrible misunderstanding. The new resident of this
house has been harassing us. He illegally locked the gate to our community pool, and we
had to forcefully open it to access our HOA amenities. I need him cited immediately.”
The sergeant looked at her, entirely unimpressed. “Ma'am, we received a 911 call from
the homeowner reporting an active break-in and destruction of private property by a mob
of thirty people.”
Before Karen could launch into another tirade, the sliding glass patio door slid open.
Tom Harding stepped out onto the deck. He was impeccably dressed in crisp khaki shorts
and a polo shirt, holding his leather binder and his tablet. He looked incredibly calm, a
stark contrast to the panicked, wet crowd trespassing in his yard.
“Officers,” Tom called out, his deep voice carrying over the murmuring crowd. “I am Tom
Harding. I am the legal, exclusive owner of this property. That woman,” he pointed a steady
finger directly at Karen, “just led a group to destroy my locked gate with bolt cutters after
being served a legally binding Cease and Desist order for prior trespassing.”
“That is a lie!” Karen shrieked, her face turning crimson. “This pool is HOA property! We
have a historical right to be here!”
Tom ignored her completely. He walked up to the sergeant and handed him the leather
binder. “Sergeant, inside you will find the recorded deed to this property, the official plat
map, and the HOA bylaws. You will see there is absolutely zero easement or community
claim to this lot. You will also find a signed, certified mail receipt proving Mrs. Peton
received a formal Cease and Desist warning her of criminal trespass charges just
yesterday.”
The sergeant opened the binder, his eyes scanning the highlighted, legally flawless
documents. He nodded slowly.
“Furthermore,” Tom said, turning his tablet around so the officers could see the screen.
“Here is the 4K, high-definition video I recorded ten minutes ago from my security system.
It clearly shows Mrs. Peton ordering her husband to retrieve industrial bolt cutters, and
then actively participating in destroying my smart lock and gate hinges to gain
unauthorized entry.”
He hit play. The video played flawlessly, the audio of Karen screaming, “Get the cutters,
Richard, or I will divorce you!” echoing crystal clear in the stunned silence of the backyard.
The sergeant closed the binder and handed it back to Tom. He looked at Karen, his
expression hardening into stone. “Ma'am, turn around and place your hands behind your
back.”
Karen gasped, stepping backward in genuine horror. “What? No! I am the HOA
President! You cannot arrest me! Richard, do something!”
Richard, standing dripping wet near the shallow end, looked at the ground, utterly
defeated, and said absolutely nothing. Two officers moved forward, grabbing Karen’s arms
firmly. The metallic click of handcuffs snapping shut over her wrists was the loudest sound
in the yard.
“Karen Peton,” the sergeant intoned formally, “you are under arrest for felony
destruction of private property, breaking and entering, and criminal trespass. You have the
right to remain silent...”
As the officer read her Miranda rights, Karen began to hyperventilate, sobbing
hysterically as she was perp-walked in her patriotic swimsuit through her own stunned
crowd of friends, past the shattered remnants of the gate she had destroyed, and stuffed
unceremoniously into the back of a sweltering police cruiser.
The sergeant turned to the remaining crowd, which was now trembling in collective fear.
“Every single one of you is currently trespassing on private property. If you are not
completely off this premises and off this street in exactly three minutes, I will arrest every
last one of you.”
It was absolute pandemonium. It was a stampede of wet, panicked suburbanites
grabbing coolers, dropping towels, and sprinting for their cars. Within four minutes, the
cul-de-sac was entirely empty of the invading force. The only remaining vehicle was the
cruiser holding a sobbing, ruined Karen.
The sergeant took Tom's statement, requested a digital copy of the video footage for
evidence, and shook Tom's hand. “Have a good Fourth of July, Mr. Harding. I doubt you'll be
having any more trouble from her.”
“Thank you, Sergeant,” Tom replied.
The aftermath was swift and brutal. Karen faced serious felony charges that required a
massively expensive legal defense, nearly bankrupting her family. The sheer public
humiliation of her arrest forced her to resign from the HOA board immediately. The
remaining board members, terrified of Tom’s legal prowess, immediately dropped the
frivolous $150 fine and issued a formal, written apology to avoid a counter-lawsuit for
harassment.
Without their dictatorial queen, the Briarwood Hills HOA returned to being a boring,
functional committee that worried about lawn lengths rather than controlling people's
lives.
A week later, the broken gate had been repaired by a master carpenter, stronger and
more beautiful than before, secured by an even more advanced smart lock. Tom Harding
sat outside on his quiet patio, the North Carolina sun warming the pale stone deck. He
opened a cold, craft beer, took a long sip, and leaned back in his lounge chair.
The only sound in his backyard was the gentle, soothing hum of the pool filter, and the
rustling of leaves in the summer breeze. It was the sound of sweet, uninterrupted peace. He
had successfully completed the project, and the final result was absolutely perfect.
