“Gabe.”

“Gabe what?”

“Gabe Keaton.”

Jerome crouched so they were eye to eye.

“Tell me what happened.”

Gabe took a breath.

“I went to the bathroom.”

“For how long?”

“Maybe two minutes.”

“And when you came back?”

“Lucas was gone.”

Gabe squeezed his hands together.

“I saw the van leaving.”

“Did you see the driver?”

“Yes.”

“Can you describe him?”

Gabe nodded.

“I tried to remember everything.”

Gabe explained what he had seen.

The man was tall.

He wore a baseball cap.

The white van had a broken headlight.

There was a crescent-shaped dent in the fender.

Gabe had memorized part of the license plate.

Then he drew everything as soon as he returned to his group home.

Jerome looked at him.

“Did you tell the police?”

“Yes.”

“What did they say?”

Gabe's eyes dropped.
