"Come in."

Daniel remained near the doorway.

"I wanted to apologize."

Marcus looked at him.

"For what?"

"For the situation."

Marcus shook his head.

"You didn't create it."

"No," Daniel said. "But I should have asked more questions sooner."

Marcus studied him.

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

"I've been thinking about that call."

Marcus said nothing.

Daniel continued.

"I checked the dispatch record."

"What did it say?"

"Suspicious activity. Possible disturbance."

Marcus nodded.

"That's what they told me."

"But when we arrived, there was no disturbance."

"Correct."

Daniel paused.

"There was also no indication of criminal activity."

Marcus looked at him.

"Why are you telling me this?"

"Because you deserved to know."

The two men stood quietly.

Finally Marcus said:

"Thank you."

Daniel nodded.

Then he added:

"There's something else."

Marcus waited.

"The call wasn't the only thing."

"What do you mean?"

"There have been several calls from the same address over the past year."

Marcus knew immediately which address.

"Caroline?"

Daniel didn't answer directly.

"I'm not here to accuse anyone of anything."

Marcus nodded.

"I understand."

"But I think you should keep records."

Marcus smiled faintly.

"Already started."

Daniel smiled.

"Good."

Before leaving, he turned.

"Mr. Reed?"

"Yes?"

"You shouldn't have to prove you belong in your own home."

Marcus stood still after the officer left.

Those words stayed with him.

Because for years, he had acted as though belonging was something that could be granted by other people.

Now he understood.

It couldn't.

Two weeks later, Marcus received a formal letter from the neighborhood association.

He opened it at the kitchen table.

The letter accused him of violating community regulations.

The alleged violations included excessive gatherings, parking issues, and "disturbance-related concerns."

Marcus read it twice.
