Marcus stared at Leo groaning on the floor, his brain struggling to process what he had just witnessed. It had to be a fluke. A lucky move by a desperate woman.

"Get up, you idiot!" Marcus yelled at Leo, though the boy was still trying to catch his breath. Marcus turned his fury back to Maya. He unbuckled his black belt and tossed it to the side, rolling his neck until it cracked.

"You think you're clever?" he sneered, stepping onto the center of the mat. "You think you know something about fighting? I'll show you what real power is."

Maya read his lips. She didn't flinch. She let the tonfas drop to her sides, sliding them seamlessly into the deep pockets of her jumpsuit, empty hands now raised in a classic, relaxed kamae (posture).

Marcus didn't bow. He didn't offer a traditional greeting. He simply exploded forward.

He was fast, incredibly fast for his size, launching a devastating combination of a front kick followed by a spinning backfist—a combo that had won him tournaments years ago.

To Marcus, he was moving at lightning speed. To Maya, operating in the silent, hyper-focused world she lived in, he was shouting his intentions before he even moved.

She saw the micro-shift in his hips before the kick. She saw the tension in his shoulder before the backfist.

As the front kick snapped toward her midsection, Maya didn't back away. She stepped in, closing the distance to a fraction of an inch. She swiped the kick aside with a circular motion of her left hand, throwing Marcus off balance.

As the spinning backfist came around, intended to knock her unconscious, Maya ducked smoothly underneath it. She was now completely inside his guard.

Marcus realized his mistake a millisecond too late.

Maya struck. She didn't use a closed fist; she used open-palm strikes, the ancient Okinawan technique designed to disrupt the opponent's nervous system.

Smack. The heel of her palm connected with his solar plexus, driving the air from his lungs. Smack. Her other hand shot up, striking the nerve cluster on the side of his neck. Sweep. Before he could react to the pain, Maya hooked her foot behind his ankle and twisted her hips, sweeping his supporting leg out from under him.

Marcus, the arrogant head instructor, crashed to the mat with bone-rattling force.

He gasped for air, clutching his chest, his eyes wide with shock and sudden, sharp pain. He scrambled to his knees, furious, throwing a wild, undisciplined haymaker at her legs.

Maya calmly side-stepped, grabbed his extending wrist, and pivoted. She applied a joint lock so precise, so agonizingly tight, that Marcus froze instantly, letting out a strangled cry. If she applied one more ounce of pressure, his arm would break.

She stood over him, holding him effortlessly in submission. The silence in the dojo was absolute. The students were frozen, staring in awe at the woman in the gray jumpsuit who had just dismantled their master in under ten seconds.
