Because true martial arts is about discipline and humility. Two things this room desperately needed cleaning of.

She walked away, leaving Marcus standing alone in the middle of his empty dojo, the silence suddenly deafening.

The atmosphere in the Dragon’s Breath Dojo changed overnight.

When Maya arrived for her shift the next evening, the students were already there. But instead of ignoring her or throwing trash on the floor, they stepped out of her way respectfully. Several of them, including Leo, bowed slightly as she passed.

Marcus was absent. A notice on the door stated that classes would be run by the senior assistant instructor for the remainder of the week. Rumors swirled that Marcus was nursing a severe injury, though everyone who had been there knew the only thing truly broken was his pride.

Later that evening, after the students had left and Maya was polishing the mirrors, Leo lingered behind. He approached her tentatively, holding his hands up where she could see them.

He pointed to himself, then clumsily formed the letters A-S-L with his fingers, raising an eyebrow in a question.

Maya smiled, a genuine, warm smile, and nodded.

Leo pulled a piece of paper from his pocket and read from it carefully, forming the signs with stiff, unpracticed hands.

T-E-A-C-H ... M-E?

Maya stopped polishing. She looked at the earnest young boy who had been so publicly humiliated just yesterday. She saw the genuine desire to learn, not to dominate, but to improve.

She set her rag down. She motioned for him to step onto the mat.

Over the next few weeks, a strange secret routine developed. After Maya finished her cleaning duties, she would stay late. Leo, and slowly a few other dedicated students who were disillusioned with Marcus's aggressive style, would join her.

In total silence, Maya began to teach them.

She couldn't shout instructions, so she taught by touch and by demonstration. She corrected their stances by gently tapping their hips to lower their center of gravity. She showed them the flow of a block, emphasizing redirection of energy rather than meeting force with force.
