“Does it still bother you?”
Walter considered the question.
“Yes.”
Then he added:
“But not in the way it used to.”
“How so?”
“I used to think about how powerless I felt.”
“And now?”
“Now I think about what happened afterward.”
Emily was quiet.
Walter continued.
“One person was afraid.”
“Dad…”
“One person decided to keep recording.”
He looked at the camera.
“One person decided not to surrender something just because someone in authority demanded it.”
He took a slow breath.
“And other people finally listened.”
Emily smiled through the phone.
“You always told your students that history isn't just about famous people.”
Walter nodded.
“That's right.”
“Then what is it about?”
Walter looked at the road ahead.
“Choices.”
“Choices?”
“Yes.”
“Good choices and bad choices?”
“Sometimes.”
He thought for a moment.
“Mostly, it's about what ordinary people do when an extraordinary moment suddenly finds them.”
Emily said nothing.
Walter continued.
“I was just an old man sitting in a car.”
“You were more than that.”
“Maybe.”
He looked again at the camera.
“But I wasn't a hero.”
Emily smiled.
“You don't have to be.”
Walter nodded.
The light on the dashboard blinked red.

Walter started the engine.
As the car moved onto the road, sunlight spread across the windshield.
The road ahead was open.
There were no police lights.
