Emma Caldwell had flown through Chicago O’Hare International Airport hundreds of times in her life, yet she had never learned to enjoy airports.

There was always too much noise.

Announcements echoed through the terminals in several languages. Suitcases rattled over polished floors. Children cried. Business travelers barked into phones. Somewhere nearby, an espresso machine hissed every few seconds like an angry snake.

Emma usually moved through all of it unnoticed.

That morning was no different.

She wore a dark blue coat, black trousers, and a pair of comfortable leather shoes that had clearly seen better days. Her gray carry-on suitcase rolled quietly behind her as she made her way toward Gate 27.

Nobody looking at her would have guessed that she was one of the most powerful people connected to the airline whose logo covered the walls around her.

And that was exactly how Emma preferred it.

She stopped beside the gate, glanced at the departure screen, and checked her watch.

Flight 482 to Denver.

Boarding had already begun.

“Perfect,” she murmured.

Emma reached into her handbag and pulled out her boarding pass. She had deliberately booked an ordinary seat near the middle of the plane instead of using the executive travel arrangements available to her.

She had spent the previous three days visiting several regional offices without announcing who she was. Officially, the trip had been described as a routine inspection.

Unofficially, Emma had been trying to discover what passengers experienced when nobody important was watching.

The results had already been interesting.

And occasionally disappointing.

At the entrance to the boarding lane stood a young gate agent named Tyler Brooks.

He looked exhausted.

His shirt was perfectly pressed, but there were dark circles beneath his eyes, and his smile had the strained quality of someone who had been dealing with impatient travelers since sunrise.

“Good morning,” Emma said, offering him her boarding pass.

Tyler barely looked at her.

“Morning.”

He scanned the code.

The machine beeped.

Then beeped again.

Tyler frowned.

He scanned it a second time.

This time, his expression changed.

“What’s the problem?” Emma asked.

Tyler stared at the screen.

“Ma’am, this boarding pass isn’t valid.”

Emma raised an eyebrow.

“That’s strange.”

“It says here that you don’t have authorization to board this flight.”

“I’m afraid that must be a mistake.”

Tyler looked at her for the first time.

Not carefully.

Not professionally.

He gave her the quick, dismissive glance people sometimes gave strangers when they had already decided they knew everything about them.

“Your reservation doesn’t match the system.”

“I checked in online last night.”

“That doesn’t matter if the system says otherwise.”

Emma remained calm.

“Would you mind scanning it again?”

Tyler’s jaw tightened.

“Ma’am, I already scanned it twice.”

“Then perhaps the system should be checked.”

“There’s nothing to check.”

Emma looked past him.

Passengers were continuing through the boarding lane. Some glanced toward her, sensing that something was wrong.

She lowered her voice.

“I understand you have procedures to follow. I’m simply asking you to verify the information.”

Tyler crossed his arms.

“And I’m telling you that your boarding pass isn’t valid.”

For the first time that morning, Emma felt a small flicker of concern.

Not because she thought she would miss the flight.

There were always other flights.

What concerned her was Tyler’s certainty.

He had not asked another employee for help.

He had not checked her reservation history.

He had not contacted the operations desk.

He had simply looked at the screen and decided the conversation was over.

Emma took a slow breath.

“Please scan it once more.”

Tyler’s voice grew louder.

“Ma’am, step aside. You’re holding up the line.”

Several passengers turned to look.

Emma stared at him.

“Excuse me?”

“You heard me.”

His tone was sharper now.

“Step away from the gate.”

For a moment, neither of them moved.

Emma could have reached into her handbag, made one phone call, and ended the entire situation.

Instead, she quietly placed her boarding pass back into her hand.

Then she stepped aside.

“All right,” she said.

Tyler turned toward the next passenger.

But Emma did not leave.

She stood a few feet away, watching him.

And after several seconds, she said calmly, “There may be something you should know.”

Tyler did not even look at her.

“Ma’am, if you continue disrupting boarding, I’ll have to call security.”

Emma’s expression did not change.

But somewhere behind her calm eyes, a decision had already been made.

This was no longer about getting on a plane.

She wanted to know how far Tyler Brooks was willing to go before someone finally bothered to discover the truth.

Emma stood beside a row of empty seats near the gate while boarding continued.

She could hear Tyler greeting passengers.

“Have a nice flight.”

“Thank you.”

“Right this way.”

The difference in his behavior was almost fascinating.

With passengers whose boarding passes scanned correctly, he was polite and efficient.

With Emma, he had become impatient within less than two minutes.

She wondered why.

Was it because of her age?

Her appearance?

The fact that she had questioned him?

Or was Tyler simply having a bad day?

Emma had spent more than twenty years studying people inside large organizations.

She knew that one bad employee did not necessarily mean an entire company was broken.

But she also knew something else.

A company’s real culture revealed itself when something went wrong.

Anyone could smile when a computer screen displayed a green checkmark.

Character appeared when the screen turned red.

“Ma’am?”

Emma looked up.

Tyler was standing several feet away.

“Yes?”

“I asked you to move farther from the gate.”

Emma looked toward the empty seats behind her.

“I’m not blocking anyone.”
