Emma watched herself ask him to scan it again.

She watched Tyler refuse.

She watched him point toward the seating area.

She watched several passengers look uncomfortable.

Then the footage ended.

“Play the previous incident,” Emma said.

An analyst sitting nearby typed a command.

A new video appeared.

Different day.

Different airport.

Same warning message.

This time, the passenger was an elderly man using a cane.

The gate agent told him that his ticket was invalid.

The man tried to explain that his daughter had purchased it for him.

The agent called a supervisor.

After fifteen minutes, the problem was resolved.

“Next,” Emma said.

Another video.

A young mother carrying a sleeping child.

Another warning.

Another delay.

Another confused employee.

Then a businessman.

Then a college student.

Then a woman in a wheelchair.

Emma watched them all.

Different passengers.

Same system.

Same uncertainty.

And almost every time, someone became impatient.

Emma folded her arms.

“This is worse than I thought.”

Rebecca stood beside her.

“I’m sorry.”

Emma looked at her.

“Stop apologizing.”

Rebecca blinked.

“What?”

“I don’t need apologies. I need answers.”

Rebecca nodded.

“Then I’ll give you everything I know.”

For the next hour, the two women reviewed internal reports.

The restricted authorization system had been introduced eight months earlier.

It was designed to protect executive travel information and confidential operational movements.

But the software update had created an unintended problem.

When an employee encountered one of these reservations, the system displayed a warning without clearly explaining what to do next.

Training had been sent by email.

Most employees had completed an online quiz.

Few had practiced the procedure.

Emma shook her head.

“So we created a complicated system, explained it poorly, and then blamed employees when they became confused.”

Rebecca looked uncomfortable.

“When you put it that way…”

“That is exactly how it is.”

The door opened.

Tyler entered.

He was still wearing his uniform.

His shift had ended hours ago.

“You asked to see me?”

Emma nodded toward an empty chair.

“Sit down.”

He sat.

On the screen behind her, the footage from that morning remained frozen.

Tyler looked at it.

Then away.

Emma noticed.

“Have you watched it?”

“No.”

“Watch.”

He turned toward the screen.

The audio was now on.

His own voice filled the room.

Step away from the gate.

Tyler’s face tightened.

You’re making passengers uncomfortable.

He closed his eyes briefly.

Emma paused the recording.

“What do you hear?”

He looked at her.

“Myself.”

“No. Listen again.”

She pressed play.

Tyler listened.

When the recording ended, he stared at the floor.

“I sound…”

He stopped.

“Go on.”

“I sound like I didn’t care.”

Emma nodded.

“Did you?”

Tyler looked up quickly.

“Yes.”

“Did you care about me?”

He had no answer.

That was answer enough.

Emma sat across from him.

“Why?”

Tyler took a long breath.

“Because I was worried about the line. About the delay. About getting blamed if the flight left late.”

“So you were protecting yourself.”

He looked ashamed.

“Yes.”

Emma was silent for a moment.

Then she said, “That’s more honest than your first apology.”

Tyler looked surprised.

“You’re not going to fire me?”

“I haven’t decided.”

He nodded.

“But I know this much,” Emma continued. “If I fire you and change nothing else, someone else will eventually stand at another gate and make the same mistake.”

She stood.

“So tomorrow, you’re coming with me.”

“Where?”

“To training.”

Tyler looked confused.
