The boy considered this.

“Did you get mad?”

“Yes.”

“Then what did you do?”

“I documented everything.”

The boy smiled.

“That sounds boring.”

Daniel laughed.

“It saved me.”

 Margaret Whitmore

Margaret disappeared from Bellwood Ridge for almost six months.

Some residents assumed she had moved.

She hadn't.

She was living quietly in the same house.

She simply stopped attending community events.

One evening, she entered Carter's Market.

Daniel was standing behind the coffee counter.

He recognized her immediately.

She looked older.

Not dramatically.

Just tired.

She approached.

“Daniel.”

“Margaret.”

She looked around.

“I didn't know you had a bakery counter.”

“We do.”

She nodded.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then she said:

“I owe you an apology.”

Daniel waited.

“I was wrong.”

He didn't answer immediately.

She looked down.

“I convinced myself that I was protecting the neighborhood.”

“You may have believed that.”

“I did.”

“But belief doesn't create authority.”

“I know.”

She took a breath.

“I should have stopped after the first letter.”

“Yes.”

“I should have apologized before the brick.”

“Yes.”

She looked toward the window.

The replacement glass was flawless.

“I don't expect forgiveness.”

Daniel studied her.

“I don't know if forgiveness is the right word.”

“What is?”

“Accountability.”

She nodded slowly.

“I understand.”

Then she reached into her purse.

She pulled out an envelope.

“I've been speaking to several homeowners.”

Daniel opened it.

Inside was a handwritten proposal.

A voluntary program for reviewing disputed HOA fines.

No threats.

No penalties.

Independent mediation.

Public records.

Appeals.

Daniel read it.

“This is good.”

Margaret looked surprised.

“You think so?”

“I think it's a start.”

She smiled faintly.

“I'll take that.”

Before leaving, she turned.
