The HOA Sent an Excavator to Tear Apart an Old Farmer’s Bridge — He Took 21 Photos and Walked Back to His Filing Cabinet
Chapter 6
“Yes.”
“We need to preserve evidence before somebody turns this into an argument about who yelled at whom.”
Russell understood.
He had spent years watching good cases become bad cases because somebody confused anger with evidence.
So he drank his coffee.
And waited.
Twenty-Two Feet of Creek
By afternoon, the bridge was gone.
The timber deck had been removed.
The steel beams were cut away.
The bearing hardware had been destroyed.
Only the original concrete footings remained.
Twenty-two feet of creek now separated one side from the other.
The neighborhood immediately lost its fastest route to the highway.
There was another route.
But it added roughly twenty-two minutes each way.
Forty-four minutes for a round trip.
Thirty-eight households suddenly had to make that detour.
And the people who had ordered the demolition had no replacement bridge ready.
Russell didn't close the road.
He didn't need to.
The HOA's own excavator had already done that.
Lydia prepared a formal notice.
The language was careful.
The association had been obligated to maintain the Tanner Creek crossing.
It had failed to document maintenance for years.
Then it had demolished the structure without Russell's approval.
The letter demanded one thing:
Cure.
Not revenge.
Not punishment.
Cure.
Reconstruct the crossing.
Obtain engineering approval.
Obtain permits.
Restore what had been destroyed.
Marjorie called Lydia.
“The board acted because the bridge was dangerous.”
“Which structural engineer made that determination?”
Silence.
“Our contractor inspected it.”
“He's a general excavation contractor.”
“He found problems.”
“Did he prepare a structural report?”
“No.”
“Did you contact Mr. Vann before demolition?”
“We posted notice.”
“Where?”
“The community portal.”
“Mr. Vann isn't an HOA member.”
Marjorie's voice became irritated.
“This bridge serves our road.”
Lydia answered calmly.
“It sits on Russell Vann's property.”
“We have an easement.”
