The HOA Sent an Excavator to Tear Apart an Old Farmer’s Bridge — He Took 21 Photos and Walked Back to His Filing Cabinet
Chapter 7
“Yes.”
“And that is exactly why we're having this conversation.”
The Neighbors Start Asking Questions
At first, residents simply wanted their road reopened.
The portal filled with questions.
When will Ridge Road reopen?
Then:
Why hasn't construction started?
Eventually someone discovered the easement.
A copy of page three was uploaded to the neighborhood portal.
Residents read it themselves.
One woman wrote:
Are we seriously required to maintain this bridge, but our board demolished it without telling the owner?
Nobody had a better interpretation.
Marjorie continued calling it a safety decision.
But the phrase became harder to defend.
A safety concern justified hiring an engineer.
It justified temporarily closing a bridge.
It did not justify ignoring ownership records.
It did not justify skipping professional inspection.
It did not justify ignoring permits.
And it certainly did not justify demolishing private property without notification.
By the second week, even the HOA's new attorney, Steven Parrish, admitted there was a serious problem.
He reviewed:
The board minutes.
The easement.
Russell's inspection records.
The contractor's quote.
The notice.
Then he looked at Marjorie.
“You have a serious problem.”
“We acted in good faith.”
“Good faith helps explain conduct.”
He paused.
“It does not automatically create authority.”
Residents were beginning to feel the consequences.
A nurse working early shifts lost hours each week.
A family caring for an elderly parent worried about emergency response times.
Parents had to change school routines.
Fuel costs increased.
The same people who had complained about slight movement on the bridge now wanted to know why nobody had simply called the retired bridge engineer who lived six hundred feet away.
Russell never joined the online arguments.
He never mocked them.
Never posted:
I told you so.
He worked his farm.
Checked his cattle.
Met Lydia when necessary.
And waited.
The Gate
Eventually the cure period expired.
The HOA still had no replacement bridge.
That was when Russell installed the gate.
Fourteen feet wide.
Galvanized steel.
