Thugs Smashed an Old Black Man's Diner — Then They Saw Something Hanging on the Wall
Chapter 3
But the final straw snapped on Thursday afternoon.
Tommy faced three of Derek's hired thugs in the alley behind the diner. Marcus was taking out the trash when he heard the boy cry out. He rounded the corner to find Tommy pinned against the brick wall, his lip busted and bleeding. One of the men was waving the envelope of cash Tommy had just earned for his boxing lessons.
"Look at this," the thug laughed. "Kid thinks he's gonna be a fighter." He punched Tommy hard in the stomach, dropping the teenager to the asphalt.
"Leave him be," Marcus's voice echoed through the alley. It wasn't the warm, gentle tone of the diner owner. It was cold. Hollow.
"Back off, old man, before we break your hips," the leader spat, tossing Tommy's cash into a puddle.
Marcus didn't retreat. He stepped forward, his eyes locking onto the leader's collarbone. Decades of peace evaporated in a microsecond.
The thug swung a lazy, arrogant right hook. Marcus slipped inside the punch with a subtle shift of his weight, his calloused hand striking the man's throat with terrifying, calculated precision. The man collapsed, gasping for air. The other two froze, their tough-guy facades shattering as they looked at the sixty-seven-year-old cook standing with the perfect, relaxed balance of a apex predator.
"Tell Derek Collins," Marcus whispered, his voice like grinding stone. "I'm coming to see him."
Marcus helped Tommy inside, treating the boy's split lip with a bag of frozen peas.
"Mr. Marcus... how did you do that?" Tommy asked, his eyes wide with awe and fear.
"A fighter doesn't strike with anger, Tommy. He strikes with physics, gravity, and truth."
Marcus didn't say the words out loud, but he remembered the mantra his military combat instructors had drilled into him fifty years ago. He locked the diner doors and walked to the back storage room. From beneath a loose floorboard, he pulled out a dusty, heavy wooden box.
Inside rested worn canvas hand wraps and a pair of vintage leather gloves.
