Thugs Smashed an Old Black Man's Diner — Then They Saw Something Hanging on the Wall
Chapter 5
Marcus picked him up by the collar of his expensive suit, dragging him to the desk. He slammed the manila folder of fake violations down next to Derek's bleeding face.
"You're going to make a few phone calls," Marcus said, leaning in so close Derek could see the cold, dead certainty in the old fighter's eyes. "The power comes back. The water comes back. The suppliers return. And these violations disappear. Forever."
"Okay... okay! I swear!" Derek sobbed, clutching his ribs.
"And Derek?" Marcus added softly, patting the man's cheek. "If anyone in my neighborhood gets so much as a flat tire... I won't aim for your ribs next time."
By Monday morning, the water was running hot, the electricity hummed flawlessly, and the delivery trucks were lined up outside Soul Food Sanctuary.
The fake reviews online had mysteriously vanished overnight, replaced by a sudden influx of five-star ratings praising the resilience of the local staple. Word on the street was that Derek Collins was taking an indefinite vacation to Europe, leaving the neighborhood's real estate alone.
Inside the diner, the smell of fresh coffee and grits filled the air. Maria sat at her usual booth, laughing with the construction workers. Tommy was aggressively wiping down tables, his busted lip healing, walking with a subtle bounce in his step that looked suspiciously like a boxer's stance.
Marcus stood behind the counter, gently adjusting a new frame on the wall. He had found an older, slightly wrinkled photograph of his wife, smiling warmly. He wiped the glass clean, a soft smile finally returning to his face.
The bell above the door chimed, and Detective Williams walked in, uniform crisp. She glanced at the intact diner, the happy customers, and finally at Marcus.
"Heard there was a gas leak at a nightclub downtown this weekend," she said, raising an eyebrow. "Owner tripped and fell on the stairs. Nasty accident."
Marcus slid a plate of eggs and a steaming mug of coffee across the counter toward her.
"Is that so?" Marcus replied, picking up a towel and wiping the spotless counter. "It's a dangerous world out there, Detective. People should be more careful."
For the first time in weeks, the old fighter laughed, wrapping his weathered hands around a warm cup of coffee, keeping watch over his sanctuary.
