And remembered the young man he had once been.

Then he opened his eyes.

The road stretched ahead.

He twisted the throttle.

The motorcycle moved forward.

Not toward the past.

Toward something new.

A year later, the Rusty Spur was still standing.

The neon sign still had two broken letters.

The booths were still cracked.

The coffee was still too strong.

And Elias still complained whenever someone left a spoon in the wrong place.

But the diner had changed.

Every Friday evening, local veterans gathered there.

Motorcyclists stopped by.

Young people came to hear stories.

And sometimes, children asked Elias about the old photograph.

He always answered the same way.

"Those were different times."

One evening, a little boy pointed at the photograph.

"Are you the man in the middle?"

Elias smiled.

"Yes."

"Were you dangerous?"

The diner went quiet.

Elias thought about the question.

Then he shook his head.

"I was capable of dangerous things."

The boy frowned.

"What's the difference?"

Elias leaned forward.

"The difference is what you choose to do with what you're capable of."

The boy considered that.

Then smiled.

"Are you still a biker?"

Elias laughed.

"Sometimes."

Outside, the sound of motorcycles rolled down the highway.

Elias looked through the window.

He saw Marcus.

Daniel.

And several others.

They were waiting.

Elias stood.

"Where are you going?"
